hi peeps

has anyone heard any noises re: the best dvd burner recently?

i have to source one - i recently read about the sony ones that can burn any of the four formats, but can`t remember where.

is there any one currently known as the most amazing thing to appear since sliced bread/whatever?

cheers

The new NEC ND-1300 looks good. It does -R/RW and +R/RW, but some have said it`s a bit picky with media. However, one of our customers bought one the other day and has had no problems. I`m currently investigating DVD burners as `d like to get one next week, but I haven`t decided whether to save money and go for a -R/RW only drive, or to spend a fair bit more and get a dual format drive.

Yeah, this is a bit of a tricky area at the moment, I stired things up on a bargain buckets thread a little while back, here, and basically after a lot of ranting, we couldn`t decide what format is going to win!
Tho at the moment I would only look at either -R or one that does both, and the dual format ones are really starting to come down, I have seen them from about £180, so may be worth considering...

Given the prices of -R writers though (the 105 can be had for under £100 from some retailers), it hardly seems worth paying an extra £80 just to be able to write to +R media as well. Last time I looked, -R discs were cheaper than +R ones anyway.

I`m putting my shirt on the + formats to dominate. I`ve got a nice Philips drive on order from Watford as part of my sinister plan to give my computer system PVR capabilities.

I`ve decided to go for the Pioneer 105 because I can get it cheap (ex VAT) through work. Both of my players work woth -R/RW, but only the one downstairs works with +R/RW, so I don`t see the point in going for the more expensive drives at present. I also just had to shell out £100 to have the driver`s side lock replaced inmy car after a break in last weekend. I only paid £1590 for the car a month ago, and I think the bloody labour charges were disgraceful! I mean, a lock is tiny! ;)

Still can`t decide what media to get. I`m getting 15 pieces of Sony 4x media with the drive for £21, but that`s only so I can use it right away. There must be cheaper/better discs about? I heard you can get -R discs for as little as 75p?

I know all about the various sources for blank DVD-R discs, but I have no idea which ones are reliable!

I know, there`s a thread in Bargain Basements, but I`m getting it for less ;) They have 63 if anyone else is interested. I was under the impression that they had a lot less of these drives the other day. I guess they must have sourced more from somewhere.
