HOW should i layout my 5.1 speakers???????

Raven1907 (Harmless) posted this on Monday, 13th May 2002, 19:06

Is it vital that the left and right fronts line up with the rear left and right???

Because its for my bedroom and i want a good surround experience but a little restricted on space, basically after doin a mental layout it seems the front left and right will be closer together than the surround ones.

Is there a recommended layout????

Please bear in mind, i will go to GREAT lengths to get a better experience, any help is appreciated.

THANKS!!!

Well i tried both of them and they both dont recomment any specific layout, but their diagrams show the rears line up with the fronts, so im kinda screwed at the moment.....

Right: here`s a summary:

Fronts - either side of TV, about 3-4 foot away from edge of TV (depending on room size etc. You don`t state what speakers you have - floorstanders, satellites, bookshelf....

Centre: either on top of the tv, directly underneath, or perhaps mounted firmly on the wall just behind the TV if the TV is hard against a wall.

Rears: usually on the side walls, adjacent to the listener, and about 3 feet above ear height. You should not have them firing back down the room towards the TV, but more across the rear of the room - the sound should wash around the rear of the room to create the surround effect. Make sure you use the test signal on your amp to set the levels right - too loud and it wouldn`t sound "real". Again, the positioning of the speakers will depend on what they are - satellites, di/bi/tripoles, "normal" style speakers.

It follows that the fronts would normally be closer together than the rears, as the rears will be on the side walls and the fronts either side of the TV.

Are you sure you looked at area450 properly - specifically http://www.area450.com/homecinema/odeon2.htm should give you some more info.

You best bet is the Dolby web site. Try this link.

This should give you all the info you need.
