HAS ANYBODY RECENTLY BOUGHT A PIONEER DVR-A04 OR 104
iF SO WHATS IT LIKE, AS I WANT TO GET ONE. WHERE THE CHEAPEST PLACE TO BUY ONE FROM
RE: HAS ANYBODY RECENTLY BOUGHT A PIONEER DVR-A04 OR 104
I recently bought a 104 from SVP Communications (http://www.121cdr.co.uk) - about £300 including VAT and delivery. They`re out of stock at the moment, mind.
The 104 is the "OEM" version, it includes Nero 5.5 burning software but nothing else (no cables or mounting screws).
Anyway there`s been no problems so far, it works really well (using both Prassi PrimoDVD and the Nero package it came with, under Windows 2000).

RE: HAS ANYBODY RECENTLY BOUGHT A PIONEER DVR-A04 OR 104
Thanks Mike, Can you help me with this questions please if you can.
whats the best dvd-r to work with this drive, that will work in ps2`s, pc and most dvd players ?
Have you had any problems in burner underun`s etc ?
what sort of hard drive space do I need for copying dvd`s as I here that its best to copy to your hard drive, then onto the disk?
whats the difference between the A04 and 104?
does the 104 region free, if not where can I get the hack from?
I need to buy a dvd drive as well, is it better to get a pioneer one as well ?
Thanks for your help and time. If there are any other advice that you could give, please do, as I am about to buy all this stuff and I`m wet behind the ears with all this dvd copying stuff and don`t want to get my fingers burnt.
Thanks again

"whats the best dvd-r to work with this drive, that will work in ps2`s, pc and most dvd players ?"
I`ve tried a few and Verbatim appears to be the best, although somewhat expensive (£4.40 each at SVP).
Of the cheap discs (i.e. £2 or less) DataSafe seems to be the one that works on most players, including my Samsung 709 and the PS2. If you want to be assured of maximum compatibility, though, I`d stick to Verbatims.
Don`t bother with the really cheap stuff, like BulkPAQ, at all - they are crap and don`t seem to work on many players.
"what sort of hard drive space do I need for copying dvd`s as I here that its best to copy to your hard drive, then onto the disk?"
I`d say 20 gigs is probably the very least you can get away with, if you`re working with DVD movie stuff that is. You can never have too much space.
"Have you had any problems in burner underun`s etc ?"
No problems so far. The drive does have buffer underrun protection, so even if you get an underrun, you shouldn`t get a coaster (the burner will just pick up where it left off).
"whats the difference between the A04 and 104?"
Just the package (i.e. software, cables, manual, screws etc.) - the burner itself is exactly the same.
"does the 104 region free, if not where can I get the hack from?"
No, there`s no way (at present) to make the 104/A04 region free.
"I need to buy a dvd drive as well, is it better to get a pioneer one as well ?"
Not necessarily - I`d just get one that`s cheap, fast, and has region free firmware available for it.

Cheap fast region free-able DVD ROM > try Liteon 163 from http://www.dabs.com. There is an update to make it an RPC1 drive. Have alook on http://www.firmware.fr.st/ for more info.
