Speakers needed to go with Pioneer 444 player and Sony STR DE875 Amp - any ideas!?!

Title pretty much says it all, but I should outline that my budget is about £400-500. Also as far as design/looks go I`d prefer a couple of beech floorstanders at the front (to go with my pine furniture and avoid a sub) and a slim center speaker as I can`t put it on my TV (slopes too much), or in front or behind (space) so really I`d prefer something no taller than 6" And that`s 6"s according to a ruler, not what you think......
