Ok, reciever recieves sound and amplifier amplifies sound, i think i`m right so far but I thought you only needed an amplifier in your home cinema set up, do i need both???I have a Toshiba SD110 which doesn`t have any on board decoders.

Newbie to home cinema (as you can tell)!

A Receiver has a Tuner & an Amplifier & as a result can `Receive` Radio.
An Amplifier ONLY Amplifies.

Oh ok, so I don`t need a reciever if I will only use the set up for my dvd player?

Thanks,

Steve

Correct, although it can be a handy plus to have a radio tuner too.
