is it possible to record on to a normal cdr on a stand alone dvd recorder?
and if so how long can you get on one disc?

Nope on standalone DVD recorders, yes on one burner only.

Standalones
Panasonic : DVD-RAM or DVD-R
Philips : DVD+R or DVD+RW
Pioneer : DVD-R or DVD-RW

Burners
Pioneer : CD-R accepted

Hope this helps :-)

The Sharp DV740 most certainly does not support DVD+RW

Pioneer is the best for CD-R/RW compatability in my humble opinion, and most standalones can handle DVD-R anyway.

Hmm... does this mean the HP list is wrong? Naughty... best drop Sharp & HP a line I guess! The Sharp 740 is the Sampo clone isn`t it?

Would this list they`ve posted be an `old` list tauted by the +RW alliance bods? Some of the other models, Sony for example, I recognise as old-line models.

The main thing that makes me turn away from the Pioneer is the problem of not being able to erase individual files, you have to erase the whole disk entirely before re-use. So for me it`s hardly a replacement for our venerable tapes, or even the TV Tuner > Firewire input connection to my DV cam.

Just put an order through at work for the Sony +RW burner. This writes onto CDRW too. Will post our findings. Has anybody bought Pioneer burner? Experiences?
