Aldi are selling the MEDION MD4310 for £99.99, any good ?

BigRed (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 4th April 2002, 19:30

I am interested in the DVD player from Medion, but am not sure on a few points, will it play VCD`s, can it be made region free and can the macro`s be disabled.

If any one has one are the picture and sound quality any good, as at this price ( and it looks quite good ) it seems to be a bit of a bargain.

Thank you

I got one today and at first it looked like the 2nd dvd player to add to my video hardware collection , as i fancied a newer but cheeper player
My first attempt failed miserably as i got one from Macro for £80 and it died after 5 mins (power supply fault)
after i got my Aldi Median dvd home it played dvd video fine ,mp3`s spot on and super on the playback of vcd`s but did note the zoom function made the picture pixelated and also mp3 playback was limited as it played the mp3 disk track by track and it wasnt useful enough to select albums on the disk.
but apart from that everything looked fine until i used my toshiba tv remote to up the volume and found most keypresses on the tv remote ran the dvd player so next was the vcr remote and the cable remote all to find i had the worlds first universal remotable dvd player so it went back and now i have my eye on a toshiba 220 with mp3 playback /vcd/cd player from currys for £179 with 3 dvd films (perfect storm, friends and another which didnt sound intresting enough to remember the name of it!)

Thanks to Baz,a bit concerned about the remote but answered most of my fears, and at £100 I think it will do me fine.

Paul,I have checked out the `Bargain Buckets` forum thanks to you,and it does seem to play VCD.

The only question I seem to have unanswered is, Can the Macrovision be removed to enable me to record to video ?

If anyone knows the answer to this it would be appreciated, Thank you

I had a Schneider 500 Home entertainment DVD that had the same problem with the remote activating my Toshiba TV & vice verce. It may be the Medion & Schneider have similar insides. Medion usually comes via Germany, so does Schneider. I have to say the picture on the Schneider was very good on everything I put in it, but because of the remote problem my "Quest" for a DVD went on to finally end with the MICO. Hope this helps you. As for MP3 playback most players seem to be very basic, so treat this ability as a usefull extra rather than a must have. PS at £99-00 if this is a Schneider 500 by another name (without the home Cinema) it is the second best deal after the MICO.

I keep reading about the MICO DVD player, I have been to Sainsbury`s web site but cannot find anything there.I have searched and found a MICO site in Hong Kong, but they have three DVD`s with no prices. Does anyone know the exact model number of the cheap £90 MICO that people seem to rate as a bargain DVD player.

Thank you

BigRed - Mico model is the Clasica 20 (don`t know any more).

Baz - Tosh220 from Currys - it will NOT be multiregion, and given past history on Toshibas, you won`t find a hack to get it multiregion - you`ll have to pay ~£50 to get it chipped.
