Cheap 5.1 Speaker packages?

JE2 (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Monday, 1st April 2002, 14:57

Anyone know where to buy a cheap speaker package?

Looking to spend around £200 and must be silver.

Can`t find anything I`m interested in at Richer Sounds and I had ordered a SONY package from QED, but they have been discontinued, they still took the cash though, so I won`t be dealing with them again.

Anyone know any good online retailers that sell speakers or packages?

I can`t vouch for Videologic`s active Dolby 5.1 sub and satellite set up yet as it is in the mail to me but I did read some rave reviws on this very forum which prompted me to go ahead. I should be able to back it up (or otherwise) by the end of the week. Do a search for ZXR-500 within the forum.

The VideoLogic Digitheatre Silver is up at £200 at QED and similar price at Simply Computers and Dabs.com etc.
According to the Videlogic Website it has had some hot reviews. I am thinking about this one as it has Dolby Digital AC3 and Pro Logic and comes with a wireless Remote control as well.

Any comments from other users?

Or there is always the Novatech HT510 and 518 (http://www.novatech.co.uk - click on speakers).

I am suprised about your bad experience with QED. I am returning a faulty TV for a refund and they have been great so far.

..ok, I`ve been listening to and enjoying these speakers for a couple of weeks and I can recommend them. Hi-Fi they ain`t being a tad rough in the upper region. Another thing they lack is oomph on the dialogue and a wider range speaker is required here because the voices don`t utilise the sub. These small foibles aside, at £68 these are very good value and add impact and scale well beyond even good TV sound. They are solid enough and look fine too!
