Page 1 of VCDs versus DVDs
Hardware Forum
I am a new DVD owner and have learnt loads from these pages already, but I have yet another question. I have a cheap dvd player (Pacific 1000) and have just managed to hack it to player multi region discs, but I wondered if anybody could tell me what VCDs play like in the Pacific (or any other player I suppose). I have found a site which sells cheap VCDs, but don`t really know a lot about them.
Are they similar quality to DVDs and what are the differences between VCDs and DVDs? Any info would be welcomed- I`m trying to build up and idoit proof guide to all things DVD.
Cheers,
Clueless
to be honest i wouldnt bother with vcds as the quality is pretty crap compared to dvd. having said that though i bought the vcd star wars trilogy boxset...
No contest here DVD hands down, still making your own VCDs is intresting, dont know what the quality of professional VCDs are like.
Take a look round.

I like making my own VCD`s and the quality can be very good. You can also get films just over 80 mins to fit on an 80 if you adjust the bit rate.
Also if you make XVCD or SVCD the quality can be just about as good as DVD.
Also cost. My last CD-R`s cost 27p each, DVD £15 plus!
Just got a copy of lord of the rings on SVCD and the quality is superb,
there is a few duff ones going about but i could not believe the quality of this. It`s the first time i have seen a SVCD, and for a pirate! only prob is it is on four discs. and its not from vcdforfree(dotcom)
