Help!! Some Players - I Need Your Opinions.....

Damon20 (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 7th March 2002, 09:05

Hi everyone,

I`m buying a player and have narrowed my personal choice down to four players, so would value any opinions you may have on thse, or in fact any other players you think I should consider. The players are:

Yelo 800
Kiiro 838D
Dansai 852
Wharfedale (are Tesco still doing these?)

Basically I have a budget of around £200 max. Ideally I`d like Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS decoders, RCE compatible and potentially Macrovision disabled.

Cheers.

I`ve been singing the praises of the kiiro for a few months now. Very competent player, with all the features you require and more. Yelo is basically the same player, only bigger. Dansai also shares similarities, although i dont think it can do 5.1 or dts. Go for the kiiro, in my opinion. I posted a review in this forum a while back - dont know if its still here , but do a search for kiiro and u might find it. BTW, good luck trying to find a dansai in the shops!
Oh, if you have any questions on the kiiro, dont hesitate to ask.

Cheers Bill, I did see your review on the Kiiro via the search, which was one of the main reasons I`ve been considering this one (as well as it being no. 2 in the Amazon sales charts).

I`ve seen one or two little niggles regarding the Yelo regarding picture quality, is the Kiiro quality fine Bill? The other main attraction for me regarding the machine was both 5.1 and DTS decoders, a huge bonus for a budget player.

I think that if you buy this player from http://ukgames.co.uk (might be dot com - cant remember), it may work out cheaper than amazon. I bought it at its older, lower price, and in total it cost me about £142, i think. Sorry to be vague, but it was a couple of months ago and i dont have the details to hand. I`m not sure what the amazon price is now, but i would guess its in the region of £150, and they usually stiff you on postage. Ukgames has it at £149.99 now, so with postage and the pound you have to pay extra if you`re not a member, it may work out slightly cheaper.
Anyway, i`ve rather gone of topic here. Picture quality on the Kiiro is excellent, very good definition, very pure black too, which in my opinion is a good way to judge picture quality. No artifacts etc. Probably it would benefit from an oxygen free, goldplated scart lead, but the supplied one is fine. The 5.1 and DTS were also what attracted me to this player, because at this price range thats pretty rare. Also, bear in mind that it is tiny! About half the width of my other player (Dansai), and quite shallow.
Since I wrote my review I`ve had a few small niggles. Sometimes it doesnt recognise discs being inserted, and it has locked up on occasion (about 2-3 times?) Given the amount that I use it, I can live with these minor irritations, especially given the quality and features of the overall package. Also, I find the menu system to play mp3 cds a bit confusing, but i havent read the manual, so thats just me! The only dvd i`ve had a problem running is R2 Mystery Men, which was a bit odd. It played, but there was lots of image corruption.
If you want any more specific answers, dont hesitate in posting again.
Regards.

The Wharfedale M5 is pretty much a discontinued line now, sadly :-(
