i have a ps2 and i use it for dvd playback and with the datel dvd region x we watch region 1 dvds and the picture and sound is very good, not as good as a £200.00 dvd player but has good as any of the budget player`s on the market, i have seen a wharfedale dvd player for £79.00 that is supposed to be a decent player.

I`ve done a 1:1 comparison with my Samsung 709 (both machines connected via RGB SCART), and the PS2 looks just as good to these eyes.

The main downsides of the PS2 for DVD playback are the lack of convenience (unless you shell out for an optional remote), and the sluggishness in navigating menus. This latter problem may have been fixed in later driver versions though, I haven`t checked.

Another disadvantage, being a Sony machine, is the lack of a region hack - you have to shell out £15-£20 for the Datel Region X, which is a bit of a pain to use (you have to boot the disc and input the region manually each time, there`s no auto setting) but it does the job.

Overall, if you`re expecting it to perform as well as a dedicated DVD player at the same price you`d be disappointed, but as Geoff says, it can hold its own against the super-budget (sub-£100) decks. I think it`s best viewed as a games console which happens to be able to play DVDs, just as the PS1 was a console that could also play music CDs.
