Page 1 of Internet through the telly
Hardware Forum
I`m wanting to access internet sites (iplayer, Love Film etc) through my new telly and Blu-ray (wired not dongle). It worked initially (once or twice) on the telly and was able to watch Iplayer etc. Now it won`t work and neither will the Blu-ray access. The sites come up (at least on the telly) but I get a `network interference` message every time I try. I was told by the fella at the shop that this is because I have a modem and need to get a router. Is this correct? I just thought I`d check with you lot before I have to ring Virgin in India and have the usual confusing conversation. Thanks.
if you unplug the power from your virgin modem, plug network lead into tv, put power back into modem it may work.
unplug power from modem if connecting to blu ray player, then plug in again.
the modem needs to power off when switching devices, even if it was being used with one pc then another.
to avoid this, as you were told, plug modem into router, then have router connected to tv and blu ray player.
Thanks I`ll try that tonight.
If I do need a router, is that something I can get over the counter (or web) and connect it to the Modem OR do I have to get it from Virgin?
you can get them from Virgin, depending on what "size"/speed you are on, and you want another 12 months you may be able to get one for free, or you can buy one on line at usual places, or in store at pcworld etc.

the thing to work out, is is your modem a cable modem, i.e. does it come through the wall like the cable TV, or is it an ADSL modem, like BT where it`s plugged into a telephone socket?
most shops do both, but the difference is important. if you have adsl, through the telephone, you usually get an adsl router modem all in one.
I`ve got a cable virgin (ex NTL) modem so my modem plugs into a router.
shops like Novatech do both, and separate them nicely to avoid confusion

RE: Internet through the telly
The unplugging-and-switching-on-and-off business didn`t work.
So I rang Virgin and they would supply a router for £60 (not free!). Is that the best option for a novice like me? I had a look at the Novatech website and got techy overload!
(BTW, If I went with Virgin is the router `mine` or is it still the property of Virgin?)
RE: Internet through the telly
Check your local Asda.
I got one at christmas for a friend for £15.
You just need a DSL compatible cable router.
If it`s ADSL then it don`t work on cable, those are for BT line types.
Doddle to set up, you connect modem to router as if it was the PC, connect the PC to one of the router ports as if it was the modem, run the supplied software to configure etc.
(btw, anyone know why christmas is showing as having a spelling error?!)

because it`s Christmas not christmas.
As I asked before and Jimbo says above, need to know how you connect to internet before can recommend you a router.
most are wireless these days, but you need to make sure it`s also got RJ45 network sockets for attaching to your tv etc , not just wireless.
remember to buy network cables as well.

RE: Internet through the telly
Sorry, it`s a cable job NOT phone socket (ADSL).
this would have been a better link then
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/prods/networking/wirelessnetworking/wirelessrouters/dslroutersntl/virgin/
what speed is your broadband, and do you use it much? Do you intend to go 50mb or even 100 when that is the norm?
will you mostly use it wired or wireless?
their own cheapo one may fit the bill for you:

Other ppl swear by certain brands, Linksys generally regarded very highly.
with cable setting it up is a doddle, use ethernet cables, not usb so no software to install.
power off modem.
ethernet cable from modem into router instead of pc (the right socket will be labelled)
rj45 cable from router to each device.
power on modem, wait for lights to stop flashing
power on router
wait a bit
power on pc, etc and it should magically work :)
if you`re using wireless that`s different, they`ll be instructions with the router how to do that.
