RGB/Composite/Scart.....

fzr600r (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 12th February 2002, 15:42

Can someone explain, or point me in the right direction, the difference between RGB and Composite (and how does S-video fit in)?

Sorry if that`s a bit of a basic question, but I`m quite new to this game!

Composite is the lowest form of transferring a DVD signal, usually via a yellow phono interconnect. Better than VHS, but avoid if possible.

S-video is a massive improvement on composite and will offer a much sharper picture and good colours. You can connect it at the front of the set, via the mini din connector, or via an s-video capable scart. Note that vanilla s-video leads to not carry cound although a scart lead will.

Finally, RGB is the most popular way of transferring a DVD signal to your set via an RGB capable scart lead ( spend £10.00 at least) This will again sharpen things considerably, and give you vivid colours. However, if you have only one RGB scart socket and you have both DVD and sky you will need to prioritise your picture preference or buy a scart junction box.(Argos, £10.00 ish). An rgb capable scart socket can be identified by three dots next to the socket at the rear of the set.

Its a fairly subjective, yet constant discussion as certain sets do s-video very well, whilst others prefer RGB. If you can, try them all out and simply see which method you prefer. Consult your TV manual to make sure you know what connectivity you have.

I hope this helps. Brief yes, but to the point.

Pete.

By the way what is your set up ?

Thank`s for that Pete.

I`ve got a Tosh SD210 DVD player, and a Panasonic TX32-PK3 widescreen TV, connected via an IXOS Scart.

I was just wondering if I was missing out an even better picture!

Well, glad to of been of some help. However, for future reference, the dvd player you own actually has got component video out, found on high end gear and projectors. So in if you ever decide to upgrade the set, which I doubt very much at the moment, consider a set with component in.ie, Toshiba.

This is even better than RGB, if marginal, but you are getting into videophile territory and yep, it costs. The down side is that I understand that the component video option does not carry sound ( cant be sure).

By the way, I bet the picture from your DVD to yor set is cracking mate.

Nice one,

Pete.

Pete!
I`m putting my RGB signal thru my Skybox to my projection TV which has only one RGB scart and the result is very good (Pace said the signal would not be altered)

Pete,

After further investigation, I have now also set my NTL cable box to output S-video, improving that picture as well!

Cheers for your help!
