Page 1 of Toshiba XDE500 DVD Player is it any good?

I`m now thinking about buying the
Toshiba XDE500 DVD Player what are the plus/minuses of it thanks for any advice

Not sure what current best price is(and where). I`m looking for a DVD upscaler but in no rush. On the Toshiba front the SD390 is meant to be good - so the same probably goes for SD490/590, as always there`s plenty of choice.

I`ve seen quite a lot of negative reviews from professional sources, but user opinion seems to be better. of course this could be because a lot of users have never seen a proper HD source. If you look at the images in this article you`ll see what I mean:

I don`t know about you, but the resulting image looks terribly over-processed to me. XDE Introduces more visible edge ringing and highlights compression artefacts. I prefer the look of the non-XDE image. Toshiba`s claims that it upscales to `near HD quality` are highly dubious; you only have to look at the Blu-ray cap in that article to see how much better it looks - more detailed, less artefacts, better colours etc.

My old Ferguson VHS recorder use to have this feature back then it was called a sharpness control. :¦

I notice in the setup menu it has hmdi 1080i and 1080p which is the best and whats the difference, cheers.

One is interlaced, the other is progressive. 1080p is the best.
