Dansai 852 & Region 1 Disks Won`t Play

HD462 (Elite) posted this on Monday, 28th January 2002, 12:00

I`ve just bought my first region 1 disks from the US, I did the multi region hack when I first got the player at Xmas, and turned macrovision off. I`ve just tried these disks (Pearl Harbor & Final Fantasy) in the player and they won`t play. At first you could hear the DVD spinning, slow then fast as it tried to load. Then no disk came up on the display. As it was spinning the display was also going dim, bright, as if there was a power drain as the disk spun up.

I tried ejecting, and putting it in again, when it seemed to attempt to load, as some garbled sound came through, and part of the picture came on screen, but very pixellated. There is a CSS setting in the service menu too, it has an auto or off setting, I tried both ways but it made no difference (what does CSS do?).

I phoned the Tesco helpline that is on screen, and they weren`t too helpful, just insisting that it`s sold as a region 2 player in the UK, and that if it plays these ok (which it does), then maybe the software on the disk isn`t compatible, and to look on the net for the hack (although he hadn`t told me so). I already told him I`d done this, and if it was supposed to be a multi-region player, then surely it should play any. The films aren`t copies, they are genuine region 1 disks.

The version number in the setup menu is V25J01103. Is this the firmware version?
I asked if there was an update, as I`d heard of people being sent an update on CD to load for other players, but he said there wasn`t.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Mark.

Have you tried setting your Dansai to region 1 instead of multi regional ?
Could be a RCE problem

Yep, I tried that too, but it was just the same. Tried Bypass, and region 1, I tried CSS on auto and off. Beats me, I wonder if there`s a fault with it. Thing is we had Pearl Harbor on hire (region2) a couple of weeks ago, and that played fine. Anyone else tried playing region 1 on the Dansai?

Mark.

Sorry, problem solved. I just thought I`d try putting the cleaning disk in, just as a daft idea. I can`t believe, it worked, a bit of dust cause all that. They play fine now.

My mistake, I hadn`t turned the oven on. Helpdesk gave me some great advice.
