I-POD Advice

bullitt2 (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 30th December 2008, 10:46

Hi,

Well I think its come to the point where I need to replace my antiquated portable cd/cassette/radio player with a new I-pod and docking station!!!

However, being a 40-ish male that can be a little impatient with learning new technology (I just hate it when I can`t get anything to work 1st time!!! lol), I am looking for something thats very user-friendly.

I`ve narrowed down to the I-pod Classic - for my big fingers!!!
Or an I-pod touch.

However, with regard to the I-pod Touch I think that it`s got a lot more functionality - but would I actually use it as I don`t play computer games and I also have a PC. But the idea of pressing a button to select thigs really appeals.

Can anyone who has been in a similiar position please advise.

I would also like some advive as to a docking statition, and some decent headphones.

Cheers.

I have an i-touch, I wouldn`t have anything else. 8)
I don`t want storage for thousands upon thousands of tracks, so its fine for me.
The ability to rent movies is great for flights as well, with the picture being surprisingly good.
With regard to a dock, if you can afford it go for the B&W Zeppelin, at around £380.00
It sounds incredible and looks great.
With regard to headphones, I`m delighted with my Shure Se210`s, at around £70.00.
I wouldn`t even bother opening the standard headphones, they are that bad.
Straight in the bin.

BTW, I`m 41. ;)

If £70 seems too much for headphones, I`d personally look at the Sennheiser CX300s
www.amazon.co.uk/Sennheiser-CX300-Eco-Headphones-Black/dp/B000S8EUNM/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1230636989&sr=8-3

At £17 I think they do a great job for sound reproduction.

The iTouch is fantastic, plus it has the added bonus of being able to browse the Internet and check emails etc. (when there`s a valid Wi-Fi network within range). So if you`re happy with a 32GB storage capacity - then I`d go for that.

No idea about docks & speakers, since I play all the music either through a PS3 or the PC...my iPhone is used as a remote control for the PC though - which is a very nice feature.
You can make use of an existing hi-fi though using the line output of the ipod docks if that makes it easier/cheaper. Sound quality is fine (for most people) although there are quite a few audiophiles who will argue about the quality :D

I`m 31 and a complete techy geek :B

One thing to add, as a thought.
Euro i-pods have a stupid volume limit.
Some say it`s loud enough, I sometimes wish I had more.
US ones don`t have this volume limit.
When I change/upgrade, I will buy from the US to circumvent the Euro-meddlers.
If I want to go f***ing deaf, it`s my choice... :D

It all depends what you want and how much music you want `available`..
I have an 8GB touch and it`s a superb bit of kit. Really, really good. It`s `only` 8GB but it`s VERY rare that I`ve thought I`d like more but that`s maybe a combination of knowing I can`t have it and managing what I put on it. I use it mostly out and about but have just bought a docking station for the daughter for Christmas so we`ll see how that goes. My brother has the B&W Zepellin and it is fantastic. He uses his ipod mainly in the house and as such he got the 160GB classic which I think is the right choice to make if you want pretty much all of your music available at a decent bitrate) at any time and pt your CD`s in another room and can`t be arsed putting the PC on etc. and ripping more. I was very impressed with the newer album art etc. interface on `even` the Classic but do love the Touch. I think you would have to be mad to drop £270 ish on any 32GB music player. If I was buying one `for the house` it would be the Classic, for `out and about`, the Touch..

I`m sure you`ve checked anyway, but the `new` iPods don`t charge on some docking stations; it might not be a problem for you, but it`s worth thinking about anyway.

I bought a Bose Sound Dock 6 months ago, and my daughters Touch won`t charge on it. They`ve brought a new one out, but it`s £120 more!!

Hope it helps,

Neil.

Yes, Apple are wt[at]s with the Touch for charging. You will struggle getting a mains - USB charger for it (even the 1G ones) and they have just made it so the new ones won`t even charge on `old` (read "not at all old" >:( ) Docking Stations...

As above but thought I`d add the following incase your unsure-

The "new" Ipod`s don`t charge on the docking stations but do work to play music (may be good enough for you).

My Iphone charges on an old Ipod docking station, so I`m guessing the older Touch`s will also? Definately will need to look into this but a month or so ago, Argos were doing Touch`s fairly cheap and they were the older ones. I`ve seen another advertisement in the sales but not sure if they still are the older ones or not.

I`m not sure what makes the newer Touch`s better, but for your purposes getting an older one cheaper and having a wider range of cheap or quality Docking stations may mean it`s a big bonus in getting the older one.

Very little.
They have a speaker, which is going to sound crap, so I don`t know why they`ve bothered.
They have put a volume control on the side of the casing, so you don`t have to unlock the screen to adjust the volume.
I admit that would be good, as adjusting the volume quickly is a bit of a pain.
(unlock screen, touch screen to call up volume bar, adjust volume).
It`s hardly a deal-breaker though.

Battery life is allegedly a fair bit better but I`m never away from a charging point for that long anyway. (36 hours instead of 22?)
It has a really useful (not) built-in Nike `pedometer` thingy.
Has a built in speaker which is about as bad as a speaker can be to be honest but could occasionally come in handy I suppose..
The side speaker controls are handy.
