TV could play R1 in colour and now it can`t! Have new player, any ideas?

Hi, Another problem with my new DVD player (damn it). I now have glorious sound and vision after seeking advice on the forum so i`m hoping you`ll save me from having to buy a brand new TV.

Had a borrowed Samsung multi region DVD player hooked up to TV and vision was fine for R1 DVDs but I had no sound with any DVDs.

Decided to buy brand new Tosh sd201e. Had problems with sound which are now sorted. However, when I try to play a R1 DVD the picture is black and white. The TV should be compatible as it played R1 in colour using the Samsung. Did the Samsung convert to NTSC to PAL which meant my TV could play R1 without being NTSC compatible? Is the multi region Tosh I have bought faulty? I would have thought the Tosh could have converted the signal automatically. I can`t find a switch on the back and I have tried selecting RGB in the set up all to no avail.

I have a friend coming today with a PS2 and direct X disc so hopefully I`ll see later for certain whether the TV can handle NTSC signal. If the TV is fine does anyone have any suggestions? Could it be something to do with the player being a R2 machine that was modified? Would the modification have altered the signal aswell or would it have left me with a player that is unable to send out NTSC signals?

Again, your help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Barry

PS: When I play a R1 disc the picture is not a perfect black and white picture, it is quite grainy.

The Samsung DVD players output NTSC as PAL - which means they`ll work well even with older TVs which don`t handle NTSC at all. The Tosh is "no compromises" - NTSC is output as NTSC.

If your TV has an RGB enabled scart, you could set the Tosh to RGB and see if this works - it`s a well-known trick which worked for a friend of mine. You will need a fully wired scart cable!
