Sony HTK215 and Toshiba sd110

norman stone (Competent) posted this on Saturday, 5th January 2002, 02:10

Does anyone know if the 215 will work with this player.

The player has 5.1 and DTS stickers on it so I presume it outputs these signals (please correct me if I am wrong).

The manual mentions something about using a coaxial cable to connect to an amplifier equipped with a dts decoder (does the 215 satisfy this criteria?). Cabling is not my forte.

I`ve read various postings on here and the reviews are good, it`s a nice looking piece of kit (better than the vs10 --looks wise anyway).

Also, www.unbeatable.co.uk have the 215 for 274.99, does anyone know of a cheaper site?

Oh yes, does anyone know where I can get some nice looking stands for this system, preferably Sony ones, and at a decent price?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Don`t know your particular DVD player, but the 215 will only take a digital lead using an optical connector, if your DVD does not have one then you won`t be able to connect the two. However if you DVD can decode the Dolby Digital signal and has the outputs you should be able to use the 215 as just an amp (which is not really the point of it).

I believe that Sony adopted the optical connectors early on and still only use one type for the majority of their products (or it might not be the case now).

You can may a converter box (which is about £35) and will probably need a power supply so that just adds to the hasle.

If you have the `optical` output then you are laughing.

Thanks for your reply.

Probably a silly question, how do I know if it has an optical output?

What are your opinions of the 215?

Is it worth buying?

Well the coaxial output is normally one rca phono connector used in pairs on regular hi-fi gear.

The optical connector is a female small funny shaped thing, normally with a black protector covering the whole. Argos sell a lead to connect the PS2 to a suitable amp so a picture of the lead probably can be found in the catalogue. Alternatively search the web, I guess there would a picture somewhere.

The HTK 215 is a great unit, very small, with plently of volume and bass, my only niggle is that the sub has to be turned off manually and can not be operated via remote control. But if you have an optical out I would definetly recommend this unit.

I too wouldn`t hesitate to recommend the HTK 215. I found the sound delivered from the small speakers to be more than adequate for my needs. It`s amazing how loud they can be (Saving Private Ryan DTS when the tanks make an appearance).
The Sony shop does sell some stands for these but they are quite expensive. I bought some from Argo for £30 but took them back as the speakers looked lost on them. So have still got them dotted around the living room at the minute.
The cheapest price I found was Unbeatable and I also took out an extended guarantee for an extra £30.

I would highly recommend the HTK215.

There are SONY speaker stands available and they are quite expensive (but well worth it in my opinion - they look great). I paid £120 for 2 pairs of stands in my local Euronics centre.

Hope this helps.
