Barking mad?

Paul Britton (Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 3rd January 2002, 20:04

I have a pro-logic set up which includes a pair of floor standing speakers but no sub-woofer. I want to add a DVD player with a 5.1 decoder. The amp (Yamaha RXV-592) doesn`t include a 5.1 decoder, but has the six inputs. It says that if you don`t use a sub-woofer, you should switch the AC-3 decoder to distribute the LFE channel to the right and left main output terminals. Is this a common feature of DVD players, or only available on separate decoders or high end players? Would I lose too much by simply not connecting it?

Thanks in advance.

Paul most DVD players and amps with Onboard decoders will allow you to set the speaker size to large or small. Large means LFE is fed to the speakers which you designate as large , (left and right typically). If you set the speakers to small it sends LFE to the .1 output.

So you need to check the DVD players setup screens or the manual to see if this option is available. It is on my Sony.

Good thing about this is if you later add the Sub (which you should as it makes a massive difference) you just reset the DVD player speaker settings to small and away you go.

Remember when looking at DVDs Region free is always the way to go. But ensure that the region can be manually set (rather than automatic) so you can play region 1 RCE disks. See www.techtronics.com for RCE explanation.

Spine,

Thanks for the tip - I now know what I`m aiming for. Can you give me the model no. of your Sony out of interest, though I realise it may have been superceded.

Paul.
