Lack of audio inputs on Sanyo widescreen TV

ram (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Monday, 31st December 2001, 13:12

Hi, I`m looking to connect a prologic amp to my DVD player (sony Ns300). However, my TV (a Sanyo 28" 3D surround sound don`t know the model) doesn`t have any other inputs other than two scart leads (both used) what shall I do?
Is my DVD player 5:1 sound?

It would help if you told us

(a) what the other components are that are hogging the SCART sockets
(b) what connections are available on the amp (eg spare AUX amps, etc)
(c) what connections are available from your NS300

Supply us with this info and we can probably work out your wiring nightmare :-)

Hi Clayts

(a) The SCART sockets on the TV are hogged by SKY and my DVD player.
(b)I haven`t actually bought the amp yet but I`m just making sure that I get one thats compatible. I am thinking of buying the Sony STR DE475 B/S. The connections available on this amp according to the spec are 1 optical input and 1 coaxial input.
(c)Connections from my NS300 are stereo audio output, coaxial dig audio output, but NO optical dig output.

I`ve just read another thread that states that the Sony HK215 can only be used if the DVD player has Optical Dig output - the amp I`m looking at doesn`t require this does it?

Any help greatly appreciated as I`m a bit of a novice!

As a fellow Sanyo owner, I sympathise totally !

Yup, you`ll be fine with the configuration you`re suggesting. The way I connect up, due to the paucity of audio outputs on the Sanny is :

DVD SCART to TV AV1 (set to RGB)
itvDigital SCART TV OUT to TV AV2 (normal composite)
itvDigital SCART VCR out to VCR AV1
Phono leads (red/white leads) from itvDigital to Cable/Sat audio inputs on AV amp
Phono leads (red/white leads) from VCR to VCR audio inputs on AV amp
Coaxial digital cable from DVD to DVD coaxial input on AV amp

Works a treat, and never ever have to use my TV volume button : it`s nothing more than a monitor in my set up.

Hope this helps :-)

Cheers Clayts

If you have any feedback on the Amp and speakers (Eltax monitor III bookshelf & Gale SW5 sub) I`d greatly appreciate it. I know the amp and the speakers don`t break the bank, but I`m viewing them as a starter pack to upgrade later, plus my lounge is like a shoe box and I don`t want to blow my eardrums!!

I think the Eltax speakers should be fine (what amp, out of curiosity ?). The Gale sub, though cheap and cheerful, isn`t the best bet in my opinion - to paraphrase Westy, "buy cheap, pay twice" - save up and get a decent one : you could probably live without one for the time being if your room is no bigger than a shoebox :-)

Clayts,

Thinking of getting either the Sony STRDE475 or the Kenwood V050D. What have you heard about these amps?

Cheers for the advice on the sub - I`ll probably pay a bit more then - any reccomendations?

My personal feeling would be go with the Sony - the Kenwood is a bit rough and ready - see Westy`s reviews at http://www.area450.com/homecinema/amplifiers.htm where our Welsh wizard was a bit unimpressed by the Kenwood.

How much are you looking to spend on the (a) amp, (b) subwoofer ?

I bought the Eltax A8 sub, which is fine for small rooms, although my new Wharfedale speakers are very capable of handling bass - I think RichH mentioned QED are doing the Eltax sub for a reasonable price - http://www.qed-uk.com

looking to spend £150 - £250 on the amp and £100 on a sub, plus £70 on the front speakers (I`ve already got surrounds and centres)

Shop around for either of these two amps - you may well get one at the top end of your budget (£250). personally, I`d go for the Denon :

Denon AVR1602
Marantz SR4200

£100 should get you the A8 sub at QED : shop around - Richer Sounds may price match it if you ask them nicely.

Front speakers - yeah, still with you on the Eltax, but check out cheap KEF Cresta 1 speakers too.
