Powerhouse ( formerly scottish power ) were selling Hitachi 28 widescreens for under £500. My mate got an ex display one for £400 the other day, with stand as well. Great TV for that money. The model number is C28W511TN. It`s silver, got RGB and S-VHS scarts, dolby 3D surround and auto picture format. Thoroughly recommended.

They`ve got 230 stores according to their website.
It asks what county you want a store in, and I don`t know what county Sheffield`s in I`m afraid.
It`s www.powerhouse-retail.co.uk.
Bound to be one near you.
Best phone them first though. If they`re anything like the one up here (Aberdeen) then best to check what they`ve got before you drive miles to find out they`ve got sod all in stock..
Remember what I said about ex-display though. My mate saved £80 and had the added bonus of not having to build the stand !
As you say though, don`t bother with anything like the Mitsubishi`s that they`ll try and steer you towards. They don`t seem to have the auto picture formatting and you`ll regret buying a TV that only does 16:9.

6 months ago I got a Philips 28PW6515 for £490 delivered and with 5 yrs guarantee free. Lastminute.com had it a few weeks back for 500 quid, it always rated very highly in tests in the magazines. hi-spek.com had it at 550 ages ago and John Lewis or Debenhams will match, deliver free and chuck in 5 yrs free guarantee. Lastminute.com had quite a few widescreen tv for under 500 quid

Just found it, £467 they have it for - its an absolute steal, virtual dolby and flat screen, no stand though
