Xmas over - sales - now to find the widescreen - which??

spireite (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 27th December 2001, 14:11

Merry Xmas and a Happy New year......

Well, my setup obviously doesn`t have a WS TV, so I`m contemplating the step......

Current setup - Tosh 210 (multi), Yam VS-10, 21" Panny 4:3.

In my many trips around the `usual suspects ` of stores, I`ve discovered several disturbing factors

1. The pictures are crap
2. The sound isn`t obvious.

While 2. is superflous given the VS-10, 1. is most important. From what I`ve been able to glean from my experiences, the best picture is exhibited by the Panny `Tau`s, closely followed by Tosh.

I`m tempted to get the Panny, but the Component ability of the Tosh (and with me having the Tosh DVD) is swaying me. I kjnow its very subjective, but any opinions??

I can`t justify going much over 1000 quid so far.... so net based it will be to get more for the money (I hope)
Over to you chaps!

TIA,
Paul

Your eye is the best judge. After all you will be looking at it for the next 10 years!
I assume you are referring to 32" models. At that price you should be.
Are both cabinets similar? Other things being equal perhaps that may be a factor.
Similar no. of connections?
User-friendliness of remote?
Do either output RGB through the second AV socket?
Ahhh decisions decisions.
Good luck.

Has to be a Toshiba for the simple reason that most of their televisions have component video connections - a must if you have the 210e.

Westy will back me up that component video is noticeably better than RGB via SCART.

Go to the Tosh website http://www.toshiba.co.uk and ask them to send you a catalogue : very nice it is too, with full details of all their products. Then you can go online shopping (hint - try places like http://www.hed.co.uk - they seem to be the cheapest)

Clayts please explain component video. Never heard of it.

If you look round the back of your Toshiba 210 you will see three phono plugs marked Y (which is brightness) Pb (which is all the colour except blue) Pr (which is all the colour except red). This is the best delivery system of a picture going from a DVD player to a TV (Toshiba, naturally) set, as it replicates the picture format that the disc was coded in.

RGB (literally, Red Green Blue) is the most superior picture transfer you can get down a fully wired SCART lead (ie not the cheapo one that comes with the player - worth investing in a BTech SCART cable from http://www.beyondhifi.net) running from a DVD player to a TV, and replicates, as far as possible the component video picture.

The differences are that you cannot alter brightness on a RGB picture but you can on a component video picture.

Simple isn`t it ? No, not really.... :-)

Just thinking a little over the Panny stuff.... is there any easy way to spot the Tau-based from the standard Pannys? I`ve not spotted an obvious Tau indicator in the codes so far.

Rent one from boxclever that way you can change it every few years rather than pay £1000 for something thats going to be worth £200 in a few years
