Can anyone recommend a CHEAP "surround sound" set-up for my Lg3200??

Hulk Smash! (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 22nd December 2001, 07:20

Hi - please excuse my thickness in trying to explain what I am after (I know absolutely nothing about surround sound systems etc. Aaah!)

All I`m after is surround sound equipment/speakers needed for my Lg3200, so I can play/enjoy Dolby Digital 5.1 discs etc.

I don`t care about the make at all - the cheaper the better!! (Would the Bush Pro300 - £99 from Tesco be OK?)

I`m not sure what is needed or how to connect it (you would never have guessed, would you!), so any advice from you fine folk would be really appreciated!! Please help......

The Bush PRO300 is great, for the money, but it only amplifies what comes from your DVD, so if you want 5.1 your DVD player will have to have the decoder built in, which I don`t know if yours has ?.
I think I`m right in saying that the Bush would still work, but it wouldn`t obviously be 5.1. It would be ` plain ` dolby surround. I don`t know if I could tell the difference in a ` blind ` test though.
If it has a 5.1 decoder built-in then you`re laughing as the Bush blew me away in a demo I saw the other day. I also think it looks classier than some even more expensive systems as they`ve finished the speakers in wood rather than plastic. A case of personal taste I suppose.
If your DVD doesn`t have an in-built 5.1 decoder then go look at www.novatech.co.uk as they do all sorts of surround systems with 5.1 decoders for not much more than the Bush.

Even cheaper at Safeway....£60! And, if you know someone who works there, believe it or not, they can get the Bush set up for £27!!!!!!!!!!! Now, that IS a bargain!

D`OHH!!! I`ve just found out that my player (Lg3200) doesn`t have a built-in decoder, so it looks like I would need a surround sound system with a decoder and the speakers! (How annoying - I coulda got that Bush one for £60!!)

Any suggestions, anyone?? Again - I don`t mind what make or where it`s from, as long as it has a nice cheap price!!

I think the Videologic one might be the next one up - there is a DTS one for (I think) £250 at Comet or Currys at the moment, but there is also a non-DTS version that should be cheaper - try http://www.dabs.com.

Try the Yamaha AVS-70, good system for the price. If you can get it from Richer it is 200 quid, else it will be 280 from Empire Direct (when I brought it it was). It is quite neat as the front 3 speakers and amp are in 1 TV top unit. The sub is very nice as well. Has got optical and coax inputs, 4 phono inputs.

I just got the Creative Labs PlayWorks DTT3500 setup from PC World for £199.99.

It has a decoder/amp and 5 small, neat speakers plus a good sub woofer.

The sound quality is top and I certainly recomend it - amazon have it for about the same price along with some reviews.
