HELP PLEASE!!! PS2, REGION X AND PLAYING R1 DISCS

Robin Adamson (Harmless) posted this on Tuesday, 18th December 2001, 14:08

I have just purchased a PS2, mainly as a games console, but as i already own a multiregion dvd player i though it would be useful to buy the region X so that i can use the PS2 as a back up/second dvd player.
I have also bought that RGB Scart lead (HMV`s own brand), which i was told would improve picture quality especially when playing R1 dvds.

Unfortunetly when i play R1 discs on the PS2 the picture still comes out in B&W! I am using the same tv as i use for my multiregion player - so i know that the tv can play ntsc discs!! But why not on the PS2???

Any help or assistance would be most grateful

thanks
Rob

B&W means you`re not getting the RGB signals through. Make sure you`re connecting the lead to the RGB SCART input of your TV - if there are two SCART sockets, usually only the first one (AV1) is RGB compatible.

The reason the picture is B&W is because your TV is not compatible with the NTSC composite signal output by the PS2. (Your multi-region player probably outputs region 1 discs as PAL-60, rather than NTSC, which is why they show in colour.) The RGB cable gets around this issue.

Mike

It is the RGB socket that i am using on the tv - but still comes out B&W!! Should i return the hmv brand and buy a better quality scart lead or is it my tv that is causing the problem? If my tv is not NTSC compatible will a better quality RGB Scart give me a coloured picture?

The problem with b/w pictures arises because Sony DVD players (including PS2) do not convert the picture from ntsc to pal in the player, they rely on the TV doing the conversion. Therefore if your TV cannot do this R1 disks will be displayed in b/w. Buying a better cable will not correct the problem.
You can buy a converter box to do this for you. Have been mentioned on the Forums before can`t remember a price but one source is Maplins.

If you`re using the RGB socket and the picture is still B/W, then I`m afraid the cable you`re using is not a RGB one! Try a different cable to see if HMV have sold you a pup. (A RGB SCART cable for the original Playstation is fine, by the way, it doesn`t have to be a "special" Playstation 2 one.)

As for the PAL/NTSC colour issue, that is completely irrelevant where RGB is concerned; if you use a RGB SCART connection on a RGB-compatible TV you will *always* get a colour picture (so long as you`re using the Region X, which gets around the "green screen"/component problem). The only reason you`d have to buy a converter is if your TV *wasn`t* compatible with RGB.
