help I am soooo confused

Adrian M (Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 13th December 2001, 13:29

I have a Sony FQ75 TV(3 Scarts with 1 RGB) & am looking to buy a Sony DAVs800 integrated
amp & DVD

Problem is I keep getting conflicting information with regards to connectivity.
My understanding is that the S800 has only a S-Video output & I thought therefore no RGB playback.

However I visited a retailer yesterday who mentioned a couple of things which I am unsure:

1. There are RGB connections (not Scart) on the DAV S800 & you could buy a RGB to Scart lead
that would give RGB playback????

2. After mentioning I would possibly like to continue using my RGB scart for viewing via
Cable, I was told that satellite/Cable do not broadcast in RGB???? (I thought RGB was an
inbuilt colour setting within the tv)

3. Generally, I would appreciate peoples views on the quality difference between RGB
S-Video, am I getting to wrapped up in the loss of RGB on the DAV S800

Anyone`s help with this would be gratefuly accepted!

I am far from an expert but I hope to help.
I have just cross referenced a review of the Sony machine you mention. It does not output RGB. Only s-video or the inferior composite scart. So, your preference here has to be s-video.
Generally, RGB is considered to be `better` than S-video when delivering the picture but, this is probably the most discussed topic everywhere.
It is a very subjective view, some prefer RGB others s-video.
Its horses for courses, and it all depends on the set, as I am told that Toshiba sets handle S-video better than they handle RGB.

Check out http://www.area450.com for home cinema guidelines.

However, you can, in theory have the best of both worlds. SKY digi boxes can deliver RGB signals so the fella that told you that they could not was wrong. Go to picture settings and select RGB instead of PAL. Of course you will need to make sure your scart is RGB enabled.

So SKY to scart 1
DVD to Scart 2.

Remember to make sure that your 2/3rd scart can handle s-video. And buy a s-vdeio to scart than can also carry sound via connecting phono leads should you wish to just watch via the TV.

Incidentally, my old Samsung DVD player actually looked better in S-video than it did in RGB whilst my Toshiba was a reversal of this.

Oh and considering that the picture reviews of this machine have all been 5 out of 5, I suspect that s-video will deliver what you are looking for by the truck load.

I hope this helps.

Thanks Pete

That really does help, SCART 2 & 3 handles S*Video, I will try & get some demo`s to compare the differences.

I have my cable box set to RGB which I informed the retailer but his
response was that the menu options will appear clearer but there are no difference to the visual picture.

Cheers

Adrian
