FAO - Westy and all Yamaha VS10 owners..(a query)

petetiley (Competent) posted this on Monday, 10th December 2001, 19:50

I am now just three weeks away from getting my amp (Yammy VS10) on Westy`s recomendation and the area450 review.

However, I have one concern about the VS10.
Overall, the power it can output is lower than say the Sony HTK475 system and/or similar models. My lounge is open plan, with the room in which my TV and DVD sits being about 12 foot by 12 foot.
Basically, I am wondering if the VS10 will effectively fill the room (soundstage !) without having to crank the volume up to distortion levels.

Will the following suffice I should I go for something louder ?

Power: 25W x4+40W @6 Ohms (Surround Sound)

25W x2 @6 Ohms (Stereo)

Speakers

Main

Magnetically Shielded 2 way Bass Reflex

10cm Woofer and 2cm Super Tweeter, 6 Ohm, 25W

Centre

Magnetically Shielded Full Range Bass Reflex

Dual 8cm Full Range Driver, 6 Ohm, 40W

Rear

Magnetically Shielded Full Range Acoustic Suspension

8cm Full Range Driver, 6 Ohm, 25W

Subwoofer (Active)

Magnetically Shielded Advanced Active Servo Processing

16cm bass-reflex, 25Hz to 300Hz frequency range, 50W

I can appreciate that this may sound like an odd question but I need to make sure.

Thanks.

Pete T.

Pete,

What are you worrying about! Don;t forget that even 10 watts of sound is room filling. Power ratings on all amps and speakers are wildly optimistic at the best of times, so matching them with suitable equipment can be tricky. What Yamaha have done is match it all up for you! Put simply, the Yammy should rock in your listening space, so don`t worry, and the best thing is that the Yammy sub is active, so the bass will be tighter and far more powerful than that of say, the Sony DAVS300, which has a very weedy passive sub(i.e run from the amp rather than its own built in power source).

Enjoy!

Agree with the above, the sub (esp on night mode :-) !! ) will fill any room.

I`ve also used it to fill a conference room for 30 as part of an AV presentation system. Only issue to watch on high volume is the fader mix applied to the rears... they are the smallest in the set up but cope very well with all the usual noises and music assigned by 5.1 unless you go mad and pump everything through them

Most lounges / apartments will be amply filled by volume and your neighbours complaining!

The experts will tell you correctly positioning the speakers will make a difference over volume to the sound quality as well!

Enjoy

Fabes
