Marantz 4100 OSE

Hi

Keep reading about how this is an excellent player for music but can anyone let me know - What is the picture like? Seriously considering buying one but cannot find any reviews. What HiFi give it a best buy award but there is no site review. HiFi choice give it a bit of a slating...seems to be no consistency.

Anyone......anyone??

Cheers - Much appreciated...

I bought one a month or two ago. Ironically enough I have played way more CDs on it than DVDs. Main reason I bought it was for decent CD playback, which turned out to be true. Lovely sound.

DVDs look nice & sharp. Vivid colours. Way better than my old Scan player (which was the latest version and wasn`t actually too bad in itself). No blockies seen on any disc yet. Some grain problems on parts of crap discs (e.g. Antz) but I blame the discs for that.

Sorry I`m not much of a reviewer but if you have questions I might be able to answer them.

Did Hifi Choice really slag it off?

Cheers very much Fergus

At the moment I have an old Encore 450 (bought as part of the DVD/Dreamcast bundle)from Game last year. the player is actually very good (good picture on the whole - bit flimsy build wise) and have been looking at upgrading. I believe HIFI Choice only gave the Marantz 2/5 for performance.

I`ve been looking at it as we`ve just moved into a new house and rather than have the TV/Video/DVD setup as well as HiFi setup I thought I`d get a decent DVD that plays CDs well to cut down on the space taken by another cabinet. I`ve not been able to find an local dealers that stock the Marantz (just placed an order for it now -along with the SR5200 A/V reveiver) I`m into the films - the girlfriends into the music - so it seemed like a nice compromise. I know its got the best buy award in What HiFi but I didn`t know if that was based on its music capabilty. Got a bit worried thinking about the visual side of things. My other choice was going to be the Pioneer 545.

Any other info would be more than helpful.

Thanks

2/5 for performance??? They must have connected it up with composite video using bellwire or something.

I use a Cambridge Audio gold scart (20 quid) into a Philips 32PW6305. Last DVD I watched was American Pie and the picture quality made me go "wow". Whether you care to put that down to the player, or the disc, the fact is that I never saw a disc look as good on my old machine.

I think you will be happy.

BTW it can be region hacked v. easily, albeit with the use of a one-for-all remote. Procedure is available on this site.

What else... plays CD-Rs fine. VERY quiet in operation. On screen menus are decent. It remembers the position you stopped watching on each of the last twenty discs - pop the disc back in and you can resume where you left off. Seems to use standard Philips remote codes so no problems if you want to use a universal remote (I`m hoping for a Pronto from Santa)

Cheers Fergus

Now just got to wait for the postie - looking forward to getting some new toys and the amp has every input I need plus a few.

Thanks for the quick response. As I say, my existing player has performed really good for the price but time to step up a grade. Just have to watch all my films again, taking advantange of the sound this time.
