Sony DAV-S800 questions

Damebo (Harmless) posted this on Monday, 26th November 2001, 20:04

The all in one systems that are currently about don`t seem to have connectivity for a video. Can someone tell me if you can connect a standard video recorder through it therefore utilising the surround sound. I have a number of top films on video and would like to be able to see this with surround sound.

Do the all in one systems restrict you to watching dvds and CDs (SACD`s) with surround sound. Also can normal television broadcasts and satellite broadcasts be seen with surround sound.

If you have phonos for audio out on your video, yes you can. Alternatively you might be able to simply run the audio out phonos from your TV - I understand that these will output the sound from whjatever source is currently playing - i.e. TV or video.

Damebo,

You are able to connect a video and Digital TV decoder to the back of the DAV-S800 and therare also audio inputs for your TV. Therefore, I believe that you are able to watch TV and Videos utilising the sound from the DAV-S800. I have not long had one of these and haven`t been able to set it up completely as yet as I want to buy new cables and I am getting a new TV tomorrow. If you go to the products area of sony.co.uk and go to the DAV-S800 they give you a few connectivity diagrams which are useful!!! As far as I know, anything that is played/broadcast in surround sound will play like it. The CD`s and SACD`s will play in standard stereo unless you choose a different sound field or the SACD is multi channel!!

Hope this helps, come back to me if I can help any more!!

PS I am only on here during the day (when i should be working!!!)

Cheers mate for your help. SO overall would you say you were happy with the DAV-S800. I keep thinking of going for seperates as one of the yamaha receivers is very good as is the Mission Cinema 70 speaker system. There also seems to be an abundance of decent DVD players. MInd you saying that it would cost me £1200 approx to put that together rather than the £650 for the DAV-S800 from techtronics

So far I`m happy yes. Like I say, I haven`t had much of a chance to give it a good testing out so far as 1; I haven`t had the time/chance and 2; I am new to the DVD?Home Cinema experience. I totally understand wanting to go for seperates as my HiFi it replaced was Denon seperates BUT it takes up half the space of the Denon, fits better in the lounge, looks better AND still gives a great sound. Add to that the DVD and SACD capability and it was the perfect choice for me. The only thing it doesn`t replace is my tape deck which I never use anyway!!!

Add to that, the review it got in Home Entertainment magazine and Westy`s comments on this forum and you have a great Home Cinema/Music system for, like you say, half the price of a bunch of decent seperates to give you the same!!!
