Wharfedale DVDRHD400F DVD Recorder with Freeview/80Gb HDD

Irri Tant (Harmless) posted this on Saturday, 21st April 2007, 14:22

have the above recorder but,

I can get sound but no picture and I want to record from my NTL/Virgin Media box.

Signal from cable NTL/Virgin Media box goes via scart to the Wharfedale and a scart from there to the TV (42" LG Plasma). Also have the freeview working. I can view channels on the freeview & record them.

No matter which way round I plug in the scart`s I can only get sound. Have swapped scart leads between systems but no joy. Also on 2nd Wharfedale as I thought the 1st was faulty. Argos help line is not much use either.

Can you explain exactly how you have each item connected up. You mention that the Virgin box is connected to the DVDR via scart, so how is the Freeview connected to it?

Please explain each connection including RF and how many scart sockets are on the back of each thing (Freeview, Virgin, DVDR, TV).

Thanks.

It`s a Freeview PVR, it does not have an external source recording facility.

You need DVD recorder with or without HDD.

I don`t think Fred is right. This machine has a Freeview tuner and an 80GB HDD, but it is also a DVD recorder using +R/W discs.

All DVD Recorders are capable of recording from an external source. Otherwise what is the point?

As 2 machines have failed to produce a picture, either the equipment isn`t being connected correctly or there are faulty leads present somewhere.

It should simply be scart from Virgin box to Wharfedale
scart from Wharfedale to TV

Select AV1 on the DVD recorder (or whatever wharfedale might call it) to view the Virgin picture, then record it.

smurfette,

Your correct it does have external input recording. Posted last night after a few tinnies.

Anyway, the `fault` is probably that the Virgin box is outputting RGB if using the TV Scart and the Wharfdale probably only accepts composite video. The OP needs try using the Virgin boxes VCR Scart to connect to the Wharfdale.

Unless Virgin boxes are copy prohibited?
Digital copy protections can show in much different ways than old analogue.
No more flashing contrast or saturation because of the macro pulse...now if the equipment has this function enabled it usually says "copy prohibit" or "copy protect" or similar somewhere.
And yes, sometimes the sound can continue to work even with the picture blocked.
Not to say this is the case here, but it`s a definite possibility.

You need to check the specification of the recorder in it`s instructions to find that the scart socket is In AND Out capable. Some are input only, some output only, some can be switched either way.

It`s also possible you have it set to RGB when the Virgin box is outputting Composite (not Component, totally different thing) or vice versa.

If you`ve confirmed the leads are ok, next step is check the specs, then check the settings menus (Virgin box AND DVD recorder)

Oh and the copy prohibit isn`t new, my CD Audio recorder (like a hifi tape deck but a CD recorder) has this enabled and shows "copy prohibit" or "digital protect" if you try to do a digital copy of a digital copy (with music you are legally entitled to create on backup copy for safety purposes) but if you try to copy the copy it`s no go.
And that was the first commercially available CD recorder that went on the market....£200 from Richer Sounds when everywhere else was £400.....ahhhh....memories.... :D

Great news that it is sorted, though it may be as well to work out what was wrong in case you have similar problems next time (when you replace this bit of kit) ;)

JayBee

You probably did what I did which was to change the AV2 scart to CVBS as oppsed to RGB - page 23 in my manual.
