Page 1 of 2 Hours and No Sound!!!

Please help - just took delivery of my Kenwood KRFV5050 amp, and a set of surround sound speakers. I can connect my DVD player and get 5.1 sound no problems - BUT connecting my TV through the amp is proving difficult.

I have a Sharp TV with 3 scarts on the back - I use one for the DVD and the other(s) I was using a Scart-to-co-axial lead through a normal stereo. But try and run it through the new amp, and no sound AT ALL comes out.

Any suggestions please?

I assume you are connecting the SCART on the back of the TV to the amp`s co-ax input correct?

If this is the case, you aren`t going to get sound that way. A TV is the final resting place of your SCART information, therefore the SCARTs on the back of TVs are input only.

In order to get sound out of your TV to your amp, get a normal pair of stereo interconnects and connect the LR stereo outputs on the back of the TV to a pair of stereo inputs on the back of your amp (you may have inputs marked "TV" on the back of your amp already).

This will provide the stereo signal received from TV broadcasts, which can be made into a Pro-Logic signal if you select that on your amp.

You cannot, however, get Digital 5.1 sound out of TV broadcasts, they just don`t do it in this country yet.

Is that right, that if a TV doesn`t have phonos, you ain`t going to get audio out of it`s SCARTs? So it`s impossible to record via scart from TV to video, for example?

I have a neighbour who`s just got a Sony S800, and was asking me how to get the TV running through it - his Wharfedale TV has no phonos. I wondered if a scart with svideo and 4 phonos would do the job (audio in and out), but looks like nothing will come out of them if this is the case.

Only other thing to do might be pull the sound from the VCR, if that has phonos.

Giles, Cheers for the advice, but what you said about the Scart connection can`t be quite true because I used to connect my TV this way to an old hi-fi amp and get stereo sound no problems.

After yet another reading of the instructions I have managed to get stereo sound by running the connection from the Scart on the TV to the L&R front speaker connections for the 6-channel input - a bit messy but it works. For some reason I could get no sound running the TV through either of the video connections provided - any ideas why?

Oh, and one last thing - my amp can handle Pro-logic sound, but I don`t have a pro-logic TV, am I able to set it up in such a way to get pro-logic sound??

First of all you should be able to get sound OUT of your TV via scart but you may have to change a simple setting via the TV`s on screen menu. the type of menu will probably look like a box (your tv) with probably two lines coming out of it and oone line going in you something similer depending on how many scarts youve got. you should be able to set it so that one of the scart sockets either outputs whatever you see on screen, or whatever comes in via another scart socket. Plug it into the phono inputs on your processor and not the co axial one.

For pro logic sound i am not too familier with your processor, but on the yamaha DSp 800 you plug the TV into the standard left and right phono in`s on the processor and then turn the effect on the processor to on (ensuring your in dolby pro logic mode and not one of the other effects (e.g. Stadium))

I come clean, there is a flaw in my logic! You CAN get information out of SCART on the TV, and yes this information does also include stereo sound.

Whilst you have cleared some points up for me with your latest posting, you have also given me another statement/question to ask...

Firstly, what amp have you got? From your posting I am assuming that it is a pro-logic model sold as a "Dolby Digital Ready" amp around the mid/late 90s. I.e. if you have a DVD player that decodes DD itself, you would be able to pipe it through the amp... via 6 interconnect cables, and get Dolby Digital 5.1 sound.

It seems to me that you have plugged the phono leads from the SCART cable into your 6 channel input, which is meant for discreet amplification, NOT for pro-logic sound. The solution would be to plug your phono leads into another input source on your amp (either TV, Video, DVD, Aux, Tuner, Tape... doesn`t matter), and then select the Pro-Logic surround mode on your amp. Hey presto, pro-logic sound!

One more thing, buy some interconnects. At the back of your video, ITV Digi box and DVD player, there should be a pair of stereo line outs on each. For each pair of stereo line outs, plug the interconnects into a pair of stereo line ins on your amp. As this is a direct connection from the source to the amp, you will also get an audibly louder surround sound.

RichardH, as I stated in my last posting... many apologies, I was wrong. You CAN get stereo information out of the SCART on the back of the TV.

For your neighbour, they would need to purchase one of those SCART cables which has EVERYTHING coming off the other end - notably an S-VIDEO cable and a pair of stereo interconnects.

To connect up... place s-video cable in the back of the DVD player. I believe there are two pairs of aux inputs on the back of this DVD player also. Plug the stereo interconnects into one of these pairs. Finally plug the SCART plug into the back of the TV.

A couple of things to ensure this all goes OK, If the TV has two SCART plugs, make sure it is plugged into the one which accepts S-Video input. If you don`t you will receive a black and white image.

On the DVD player, go into the DVD setup menu and ensure the video output is set to S-VIDEO, if not, you will also receive a black and white image.

Other than that, you should now have a TV with sound coming out of the Sony system.

Giles & Co - thanks for your help - finally got it cracked.
Firstly my amp is the Kenwood KRF-V5050D which does DTS DD and all that kinda thing, incl pro-logic.

..back to the storey. Managed to get sound out of one scart socket (my tv only has L&R AV connections on the front and i don`t like having the cables hanging out the front) and managed to enable one of the video inputs on the amp to accept the input from the tv. From there onwards I just selected the pro-logic function (or any other effect) and hey presto!

It now sounds grrrrrrrreat. Thanks again to everyone that helped.

Cheers Giles - popped round the other day, and he`s gone and bought a 2 phono/svideo lead, after I had suggested a svid/4 phono to ensure he got the right scart pins. Hopefully he will be able to configure the TV to output to the phonos - when I was round he was having occasional B&W display, so I suggested it might be plugged into the RGB rather than SVID scart.... was in a rush, so left him to it.... next time I see him I`ll see how he`s got on.
