S-Video pictures appear in B&W...HELP!

MadPom (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Wednesday, 21st November 2001, 09:51

I`ve just acquired a Toshiba 28DB Widescreen/Dolby Surround TV (new, bargain from dabsxchange auctions). Anyway, I`ve discovered that no matter what I connect to the S-Video scarts it appears in black and white.

I have an LG3000E DVD player, and a JVC S-VHS video (I forget the model number, sorry). When either is set to output in s-video mode the TV only displays a B&W picture, even though the TV is correctly set to s-video mode for the scart sockets in question.

The video is wired via the scart throughput of my Nokia OnDigital box, I`ve not been brave enough to move my tv cabinet so I can change this. I`ve not tried a s-video cable yet (the 4-pin DIN type).

When I turn s-video off the dvd player picture appears in colour, but just composite (trust me, it looks awful!) and with the video still set to s-video but not the telly, that picture remains in B&W.

I`m using fully-wired 21pin scart leads (nothing special mind, just a couple of quid from Argos!) but suspect the problem lies with the telly itself because two different sources appear in B&W.

Can anyone help? All suggestions appreciated.

Cheers,
Rob!

Hi Rob,

I have a Philips widescreen (forget the model number), and I found certain sources to the S-Vid socket (Playstation2 for example) came up in B&W. However, I found that pressing the input select several times toggled through SCART, AUX, and a third input called `C/W` or something like that and where the picture was B&W on the Aux `channel`, it was colour in this mystery third channel.

I know this is a bit vague, but hopefully it might give you something to go on.

Cheers,
Tris.

One possible way of alleviating your DVD problem... does the DVD player have an RGB output? and does the TV have an RGB input?

I have a feeling that you have connected the DVD player to the RGB SCART of your telly. If this is the case, go into your DVD menu and select RGB.

If this doesn`t work, another suggestion is to keep your settings on S-Video and swap the SCART plugs around in the back of the TV (e.g. so the DVD player will output to AV2 instead of AV1).

Let me know how you get on with those, and then we`ll see if we can tackle your video player problem.

Giles.

Hi again,

Thanks for all the replies so far. At the moment, I have 1 RGB scart socket, which my DVD player is connected to.

My Nokia OnDigital box and JVC S-VHS are connected to one of the S-Video scarts (I`ve checked all this in the manual!).

When I set the TV menu to S-Video for the rear scart (and turn on S-Video output on the VCR) the picture goes B&W, although it is clearly an S-Video image as the picture appears sharper. When I connect the DVD player to one of the S-Video sockets, and turn on it`s S-Video output it also goes B&W.

I managed to borrow a friend`s Digital Camcorder with an S-Video 4pin DIN output and tried that, into the front DIN socket. This appeared in colour. I could use the DIN output from my VCR, but my OnDigital boy cannot output S-Video, only RGB hence why I want that on the only RGB scart and the DVD on the S-Video scart.

Hope someone can help, otherwise I`ll have to try my luck with Toshiba (ha!)

Thanks again in advance
Rob!
