Connecting Digi Boxes to old tvs

jacquiB (Harmless) posted this on Monday, 19th March 2007, 13:41

I have a tv that does not have a scart socket being some 20 yrs old. I notice that digital set top boxes need to be connected via a scart socket to the tv so is there anyway I can overcome this or, once digital switch happens, will this tv been redundant?

Hi there,

If you must hold on to the family airloom.
If you had a video recorder conected, many have a scart or AV in. Attach the digibox that way. Yes there are straight composite to RF converters about.

Digibox is a Sky brand name for a Sky digital satellite box.

All Sky digiboxes have an RF modulated output, so you can tune your old TV in OK.

If you mean Digital Terrestrial i.e. Freeview boxes, some have an RF modulated output but most don`t, you can get add on RF modulators for around £15 to £30 have look in Maplins for example

A few Freeview boxes have RF modulators, allowing connection via the aerial socket in the TV - the Humax F2-Fox T for example, which is a respected STB but more expensive than average.

The old OnDigital (ITV Digital) boxes, which you can still pick up secondhand and cheap, will also perform, but they`re rather slow and under-specified compared to today`s.

The picture will not be as good as with SCART, though, but possibly acceptable if you love your telly ;)

Well I applaud the person who started this thread for not being so quick to dump a good old telly. There`s mountains of electronic goods being dumped now and it`s an environmental nightmare.

I hope it lasts another 20 years!

Luv`n`kisses
