Best player for under £300

Hi all - I`m new to this DVD malarky and am considering my 1st player.

I have a 28" JVC Flatscreen TV and Quad77 hi-fi amp to plug the machine into.
I also have a Cambridge DACmagic][ to plug any digital audio into.

My priorities are sound and picture quality.
Optical output (for sound) would be nice (This would enable me to plug the the player into my DAC).
I`m not bothered about surround sound - good quality stereo is my priority.
Multi-region would be nice - but not essential.
MP3 playback would be nice - but not essential.

As I say - my budget is around £300.

Many thanks for your time - It`s very confusing buying your first DVD player!

From what I`ve seen on this forum over the last few Months...the Toshiba SD210 seems to be the `dogs` at the moment. It does MP3 and if you purchase from one of the `online` dealers, can be multiregion modified. Think `dvdmagic.com` was one of them.

Thanks very much - just checked out a review of this machine in DVD buyer and it does look excellent.

Apparently it`s multi-region out-of the box too :)

Cheers,
Andy

Warning about the Toshiba - apparently there is a high failure rate for this machine according to a guy who works at a prominent internet retailer. He recommends the Pioneer 444 as THE machine to invest in now

I think I`d probably go along with John if you`re looking to fork out up to £300. There are spposed to be RCE issues surrounding the 210e, but I`m not too sure how substantiated they are.

The Pioneer DV444, despite being the world`s skinniest player, is a looker, is available in silver or black, and I believe companies like http://www.upgradeheaven.co.uk are knocking them out multiregion at a pretty good price.

Just bought one from multiregionmagic - I was going to but Tosh too - actually ordered it on line - then more good info on 444 and negatives on 210 - so rang next morning to change 444. Glad I did - got it the next day.
Brilliant - quiet - good looker - plays anything! Recommended!
