TV problem - strange coloured rings have appeared. Help*

JamieM (Competent) posted this on Saturday, 27th January 2007, 10:49

Hi all. I`ve got a 28" BUSH TV, that`s only a couple of years old. It`s the traditional `tube` television (I don`t know the technical term, but it`s not an LCD/Plasma). Anyway, I`ve turned it on this morning, and there are some very strange coloured rings - resulting in colour changes at the left/right edges of the screen (purple, green, blue - like the image is being inverted). To me it looks like the same problem as when you put a speaker/magnet too close to the TV. But nothing has changed/moved since the TV was turned off last night, and turned on this morning.

Any advice as to how I can get rid of this? Or is the TV well and truly knackered? Seems a bit strange for a TV thats only 2-or-so years old.

Also, sometimes the TV developed a high-pitched whistling noise from the body, which would go away after a few minutes. It seemed to have no effect other than being annoying, so I don`t know if it`s connected?!?!

Any help would be appreciated. Cheers, Jamie

Sounds like the de-gauss thermistor has failed.

Any TV repair shop should be able to fix it.

The high pitched whistle is unlikely to be connected to this fault, but again should be repairable.

Most likely the LOPT or possibly a capacitor is on its way out.

As for the rings are you sure you weren`t watching Captain Scarlet at the time? ;)

I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.

Todays goal is to exceed yesterdays record level of totally unverifable productivity.

I don`t understand why people knock ASBO`s, they are good things as for most of the recipients, these are the only qualifications they will ever have.

Unlikely, more likely a linearity inductor.

LOPT`s don`t whistle, they either smell awful as the insulation breaks down and burns or arcs or cause tripping a regular thumping sound and the TV remains in standby. Capacitors dry out but never heard of one whistling, unless it went S/C and flew past your head at a great rate of knots. :D

Thanks for the replies. I didn`t really care about the whistling as such - as it normally died away after a few minutes. But the screen went from bad to worse shortly after making this post - the entire screen went mulit-coloured (people were purple, then green, etc), and the left/right edges of the screen started closing inwards, and distorting. It wasn`t pretty!

Anyway, the local TV repairman quoted £60 +VAT to collect, repair, and deliver back the TV. A decision was then made to just go and buy a new TV, and take a step into the future by getting a 32" HD LCD. Not an expense I had expected, but one that the savings came in handy for!

So I now have a 28" TV that needs repairing. Do you think there is any point in me asking if the local TV repair shops would like to buy it from me, to repair themselves and then sell on? Or eBay it (clearly stating it needs repairing)? Either way, what kind of money can I expect if trying this? Any ideas?

Cheers.

That`s yet another fault. It sounds like a Bush with a Vestel AK19 chassis. To be honest it`s not worth repairing, you can get a new 28" non widescreen in Asda for £100 with a years guarantee.

A visit to the local tip is all it`s worth. I certainly would not buy it might take if it offered free. A local TV shop if they repaired it would have to offer some kind of guarantee, at least one month, by the time it was repaired there would be no profit in any sale as it`s unlikely to fetch as much as £50 in working condition.

I normally buy TVs from John Lewis as they give a free 5yr warranty & also price match high street stores (not online stores)
