Page 1 of cheap dvd recorder

My sony dvd recorder decided not to play dvd`s anymore (keeps ejecting them)
only plays cd`s, it`s only 18mths old! took it in to my local service centre and they said it`s not worth fixing as it will be cheaper to get a new one.So my question is can anyone recommend a cheap one ( brand name not important) must have digital coaxial out and possibly a tuner

Went into Curry`s today they had the Alba RDVD1002 DVD Recorder for £49.99

Before investing in a replacement you should return back to the retailer who sold you the DVD recorder. You have warranty rights up to 6 years from the date of purchase - there is no legal limitation at 1 year as this is a manufacturer warranty statement and you have no contract with the manufacturer. It is certainly not reasonable to expect electronic goods like this to be beyond economic repair after only 18 months. If you paid by credit card the card issuer is also jointly liable for the supply of the goods and you may be able to get some satisfaction from them if the retailer will not help out or has gone out of business. It is not unusual for the credit card company to claw back the cost of sorting out the problem from the retailer if you can show the retailer is not behaving reasonably.

The life expectancy of a DVD Burner should be based on its workload, not the timespan that you`ve owned it for.

I have discussed this elsewhere on the web, and it would seem that most DVD Recorders that have had failed drives have done so after 150 or so burns. I don`t think you should expect a retailer to constantly replace a machine each time the burner fails up until about 6 years from the original purchase. It would be financial suicide for them.

Everyone knows that it is now cheaper to replace than to repair for almost all household electrical appliances and gadgetry.

The whole point of consumer legislation is to prevent retailers stocking items which are prone to premature failure, indeed financial ruin for them is the incentive to do so. My guess is that 150 burns for many DVD recorders in average usage would relate to less than 1 years usage! The data sheets I have seen relating to DVD burners certainly do not quote anything like so short a life span. My real point here is to reinforce that consumers do continue to have rights way beyond the 1 year often quoted by retailers and these can be enforced. In my case I had over £500 worth of repairs paid for to a DLP television that was faulty 18 months after it was purchased. The credit card company paid the repair bills as the retailer had gone out of business but there was no denial on their part as to their liability (under section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974).

The only one I have found dosent work


Open tray, make sure its empty.
close the tray up and press TV/DVDR (nothing after thi line works)
press RETURN
press DISPLAY
now ENTER 8880

A message appears on the screen saying Region Free.
