I`ve managed to hack this DVD recorder to play non-R2 DVDs, but I can`t get the picture format to change from PAL to NTSC, so all my R1 NTSC DVDs look decidedly poor. Does anyone know how I can do this? Am I missing a menu command?

Not all multi region PAL players swith to NTSC, so yours may well be one of them. If so you are stuck with playback in PAL on region 1 discs. This normally results in a slight jerkiness in playback, due to the differing frame rate.
