Page 1 of Do most of the DVD recorders produce region free DVDs ?

I want to know if the DVDs that we burn from the DVD recorders (in my case) Pioneer 440 are region free?

The way I understand things, discs aren`t region coded, but rather signal/system coded. If your system is PAL, the dvds you create will be in PAL format. In my case all the dvds I created with my recorder is in NTSC format since that is the standard for the US/North America.

Yes, that sounds about right to me.

Any disc I record on my Panasonic, is region free, but recorded in PAL, as that`s what the recorder is set to, as I live in England.

so the dvd will play in any PC DVD drive fine, and any stand alone dvd player, BUT, if a US person tries to play it on their DVD player in the US ona US TV, I think they have to make sure their TV does PAL60 i think it is. In the same way that to watch an NTSC DVD, it`s not only a case of having a multi region DVD, but my TV has to be capable of displaying NTSC, in colour, which these days they nearly all do.

i assume it`s region free as you don`t stand to lose loads of money through copright reasons if ppl overseas watch your DVD before you`ve decided theyr` eallowed to ;)

All dvd recorder discs are region free.

Certain recorders can record in both PAL and NTSC (Pioneer and Panasonic can).

However,they cannot change a recording from one system into another.

For example,if you input an NTSC signal ,from satellite or NTSC DVD ,those recorders will record it in NTSC.

Similarly if the input is PAL it records in PAL.

Both Panny and Pioneer require you to change the "tv system setting" to enable NTSC recording.

Most other recorders won`t touch NTSC ,especially the cheapies.

US viewers need either multi standard equipment or a player that converts to NTSC.
I know that US Cyberhome players do convert.

I`ve just been spending this week making copies of home made dvds a friend in the UK just sent me. My Philips stand alone dvd player plays the PAL discs as if they are NTSC discs so I can make NTSC copies of my PAL dvds. The Philips seems to adjust the number of lines too, on some players the picture seems too big for the screen.

So I think you can basically do anything with these dvd recorders if you have the right equipment.
