Page 1 of iPod advice....

Haven`t got an iPod... :o
Unlike most other mp3 players, as far as I`m aware (please correct me..) an iPod behaves differently when you connect it to a PC. It doesn`t just appear as another drive and allow you to drag music to it. Is that right? You need iTunes (or something similar). Does that mean if you have an iPod and someone has an mp3 on a PC, there`s no easy way of actually getting the file onto your iPod to play?
When you copy files to an iPod, does it convert them on the fly to their format (aac?)?
Can you navigate around the folder structure of one?

You are right in how the ipod works. however, it doesnt convert files (mp3 to aac) as the ipod can play mp3 files as well as they are.

If you want to copy music from someone else`s Pc - you need to have itunes installed on that PC. Thats the only way I know I am afraid.

To copy files out, you can use utilities like podhack which show you the directory structure of the ipod and allow things to be copied (I dont think you can delete/move so you cant copy new songs in, but can copy songs out)

you could also simply copy the mp3 files from the other computer onto a removable media (pen drive, cd etc) then put them on your PC, then add them to your ITunes list and transfer them to your Ipod that way

Try Anapod Explorer from Red Chair Software. Its lets you drag and drop and copy stuff off the ipod. Works with mp3`s, photo`s and Video.

Then again you could buy almost any other MP3 player & just drag & drop whenever & wherever you are & play wma etc files. I just had this problem with a students i pod & nice though it is, it would never be on my Christmas list.
