Samsung LE32R71B - Advise regarding setting up and cleaning

Riggs (Elite) posted this on Friday, 17th November 2006, 11:44

So my new Sammy finally arrived, my new copy of the Matrix went into the dvd and away I went....WOW! Even with the standard settings I was impressed so hopefully when I`ve tweaked it I will be even more so. However a couple of questions that I can`t seem to find answers to.

1) Auto wide vs 16:9 setting. I paused the Matrix and switched between settings. The 16:9 setting seemed to really reduce the height of the picture but I couldn`t really tell which setting was correct. I know some movies will still have black bars because of different aspect ratios but which setting should I be choosing for dvd playback (through RGB scart at the mo until I ger my 360 at Christmas which I will use thru VGA).

2) I noticed what I thought were scratches on the screen but it appears to be some residue of something (the `scratches` sit proud rather than cut into the screen). I get some of the residue off with the cloth provided but not all of it. What can I use to clean the screen? Also is there a protective surface that you can rub off if you rub too hard?

ta in advance.

Damp cloths only I think - but LCD (laptop) wipes should be okay as I think they use saline?

I use the cloth that came with it even though I think this is only for the surround and not the screen.

How have you tweaked your settings?

Thanks for the info Nick - the damp cloth seemed to do the trick (just have to be careful I don`t rub too hard ;) ).

I haven`t changed any of the settings yet other than turn the brightness down (I had planes landing on my lawn it was so bright). Over on AVForums someone has made a homebrew setup disk which I thought I might try as I really have no idea how to get the right balance between colour/brightness/contrast.

How have you set yours up?

Here`s what I did for mine

Pop a DVD on a scene you remember straight out of memory... then play with the settings till you are happy with something. Remember these settings are individualised so wont be the same for two people. I spent £10 on a Digital Video essentials disk but have not used it till now and am pretty happy with my settings.

Oh - and use component to connect ur DVd player. The picture quality is much much better...

Thanks for the info timechaser. My dvd unfortunately doesn`t have component-out so I am making do until I get my 360/HD-DVD at Christmas.

Any ideas regarding Auto-wide vs 16:9?

Thanks

I think I have tweaked the movie setting to match the blacks with the black bars on a DVD. I just used a few films I knew really well and got the picture to how I was happiest with and it seems to look okay to me. A million times better than my Philips 28" CRT.

However, as was said above, it is all down to individual taste.

I don`t think my AS DVD551 has component out either.

Riggs. Would recommend setting to auto-wide as if you force the aspect to 16:9 on everything, some or the other picture will get distorted. I think I had my TV forced to 16:9 setting and was trying to watch friends, wondering why Jennifer Aniston is looking so fat. I turned it to auto wide, and things were happy after that.

I know what you guys mean by no component, but try component and you will notice the difference. I bought a component progressive scan dvd player some time after the TV and the difference was IMMENSE!!!

I also added a home theater system, but thats a different story ;) (sorry, couldnt resist that interjection - I know not in the best of taste but... :P)

Sorry, meant to add in my post that auto wide is the best setting.

Plus when zooming on non-anamorphic stuff the picture still looks good I think.

I don`t get the home theatre joke, am I missing something? :/

No joke - was trying to brag, tell everyone how great I am owning a home theater and that kinda stuff.

I feel stupid putting it up! :)

No joke whatsoever...

I thought HDMI connection was the best? Isn`t HDMI better than component if your dvd player has it?
