Anyone getting poor picture on some sky channels.?

Superted (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 19th October 2006, 07:14

Have noticed lately that the picture quality on Sky is very poor, we are using sky+ with a Sammy LE32R51BD LCD TV Via RGB scart.

The odd thing is that some channels look really good, films, documentary, kids etc whereas others are poor, some of the entertainment channels. And others are terrible, channel 4 E4 and more4 especially.

Just wondered if anyone else had noticed the same thing.

All the best

Gerald.

No can`t say that I have. I`ve got the new generation Amstrad Sky box, and everything looks crystal clear through the RGB SCART connection to my 28" Thomson CRT TV. So nothing fancy, but all working as it should.

How long have you had the LCD set?
Switching from CRT to LCD will bring a noticeable drop in picture quality with Standard Definition inputs like Sky.
The Sky Digital service itself does not help matter by broadcasting at low bitrates on many channels which makes things worse.
Some of the lesser channels are bad on CRT and are quite unwatchable on LCD

We`ve had the TV for just over a year and the sky+ box since February, only noticed the problem in the last few weeks.

Dropping the bit rates to make HD look even better perhaps?

;)

I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.

My MD recently bought a 40" Samsung.
The SKY picture is truly awful.
I couldn`t put up with it.
He seems to have convinced himself it`s great though. :/

I`ve thought this for a while on Freeview. Freeview used to look amazing. Now a lot of it (the crowd in football matches :o ) looks a mess. Plenty of blocky artefacts too now. :(

Ste

We will pay the price but we will not count the cost..

Its strange that it is worse on all the channels to do with C4, might be that it is them having problems and I just noticed it. Just had a look on E4 and C4 and the picture seems ok at the moment and it is pouring down outside so not weather related.

$ky use dedicated transponders for their high defintion channels (with DVB-S2 channel coding and MPEG4 encoding).
Therefore they would not be able to make any bandwidth gains by reducing bitrates on their non HiDef channels.
Yes they could be trying to make SD look shabby, I suppose.
If you have a PCI satellite tuner (no good for $ky) and steerable dish, you can check the bit rates with TSReader Lite (www.coolstf.com/tsreader, free download for Lite version) or other MPEG transport stream reader.
