Pro Logic sound problems

privatewire (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Monday, 14th August 2006, 17:16

:/ This might be something about nothing, but its annoying the hell out of me!
I run a Toshiba xds-24 hard disk/dvd recorder/player combo through an Acoustic Solutions Ds633 home cinema kit and by and large I am delighted by the sound.
But!
When I am playing a dvd and switch to co-ax input on the amplifier it appears to lock up and I get a loud clicking noise through the amp, I can get rid of this by pressing the "surround" button on the amp remote a couple of times, but like I say, its damned annoying! This also happens if there is any sort of break in the dvd or sometimes if I press pause and then play. This is especially apparent in older dvds,I assume its something to do with the dual layer process, but has anyone got any ideas?
How much am I missing if I listen to the output of the Toshiba via the phono leads as opposed to the co-ax?(there is no optical output)
I can stop the problem by switching from "bitstream" to "pcm" in the audio menu, but doesnt this just give me a 2 channel output?
Sorry guys, its a bit complicated!!!

Yup, that sounds extremely annoying. Whether the glitch lies in the amp, the lead or incompatibility between the machines, I dunno. Can you try a different lead to see if it cures the problem?

Firstly, when playing back pre-recorded original DVDs, you will require Bitstream as that gives you the DD or DTS 5.1 sound that is on the DVD soundtracks (assuming your amp is DTS compatible). PCM is an alternative digital 2 channel audio system used primarily for music.

If you switch to the phono leads, all you will get is Pro-Logic - you cannot get digital audio through those leads, so that is not a long term option.

Of course, your Toshiba is only recording in DD 2.0 (it probably also has the ability to switch to PCM recording), so if you are only playing back your own recorded discs from there, then using phono leads won`t lose any noticeable sound quality.

I`d check the lead and connections first and take it from there...

:) Sue, thanks for that, yes I have tried a new lead which doesnt make much difference. The amp is definitely dts compatible.
The weird thing is that this problem doesnt show up with every disc,I can also replicate it by selecting the coax input and selecting the on screen menu of the hard disc.
Logic would say that the digital signal is either there or its not, if its not you wont get anything, but I wonder if a good clean of all the connections might help.

That`s definitely worth a go at this stage. I`m not certain it`ll cure it though. Got a feeling there`s a problem with either the firmware or the motherboard in either the Tosh ot the amp, and that`s not something I can help you with.

I can`t recall this probelm occurring before anywhere that I`ve been online, so it`s worrying me that it`s a little more complex than just cleaning connections.

But you never know - give it a go. Maybe someone else will find this thread and have a little more insight into what could be the cause.
