Samsung R7 LCD TVs - Looking to buy one

flyingmonkey (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 1st July 2006, 11:36

Hello

Within the next month I am looking to buy a 32" Sammy R7 LCD TV. I have read lots of reviews on them and they look like good TVs. I have also read in places that Sammy panels are very good and they even now supply Sony.

I have spoken to Samsung and the only differences in the R7 series (R71, R72...etc) are cosmetic so I could get any of the 32" versions as long as they are black.

I have read that the R74s had problem with the connections at the rear so I have emailed Sammy to see if this is still an issue.

What I am hoping to do is trawl around the retailers and see if I can get one for £800, otherwise I will have to buy online :-(

Does anyone here have any experience of these TVs?

Cheers

Nick

I have got an LE32R51 bought just before Christmas, as far as I know the R series are pretty much the same, mostly cosmetic differences as you say.

Have to say it is superb, amazing picture, sound is not brilliant but we never use that anymore. The only thing against it are the rear connectors, not sure if it the same problem as you have seen.

They are set back in the TV so a few of the connectors were only just resting in place, the worst one being the component cable, the recessed holes in the TV are slightly smaller than the phono plugs on the cable we use so I have had to force them in. And the audio cable to our Amp wouldn`t go in at all but as it had rubberised phono connectors I have just trimmed them down slightly.

I also heard that Samsung were now supplying Sony, this was on the gadget show on channel 5, they said that LG and Samsung supply almost every screen you will see, apart from Panasonic who make their own just for themselves. Also for obvious reasons a Sony or any other set won`t have the latest screen design, the one they have will be a 2 or 3 year old design. So if you want the latest technology then buy an LG, Sammy or Panasonic.

All the best

Gerald.

Thanks for that. I will ring Samsung about the rear connections issue.

I have a 40 inch Sammy in the range you are looking.

Rear component connections are tight, but OK to get the connection in.

Bit of a dust magnet, but other than that, a superb picture.

Thanks Davo.

What do you have connected to the TV?

Nick

I have the following connected, with my views next to each (may help you decide).

XBox 360 via component - 1080i - picture stunning, great detail, no tearing, just sublime.
You can also see the difference by going into dashboard, and setting it at standard, then 720p, then 1080i, the difference is amazing. 9.5/10

Sky (standard) via RGB Scart - picture is nice a crisp on most things, but on footie and some poor transmissions you do get some blocking. That said it is very good. 8.5/10

DVD (standard) via component - picture is superb, nice levels of detail, no blocking, nice black level, very pleased. 9/10

Standard TV with built in tuner - more than acceptable. 8/10.

Freeview built in - cannot test as I cannot any signal.

VGA PC input - I intend to use this with my iMac, ordered cables, but not tested.

HDMI - also untested, but I plan to import a Toshiba HD player.

Styling - nice, very nice, but the gloss finish is a dust magnet.

Build quality - superb, but watch out for cracks and knocks during delivery.

Swivel stand - very nice.

Sound - superb 9/10.

Connectivity - could do with an extra HDMI for futureproofing.

Would I buy again - yes, purely because I definitely did NOT want a plasma. This LCD is just superb, my main use films and X360 has been delivered with awesome picture, I am very pleased.

Hope this helps.

Davo

Many Thanks for that, the connections were my main worry as I read some bad reports about them.

I will be connecting:

Cable box via Scart.

DVD via Scart (is this the best option).

Xbox via component or Scart.

Ordered a LE37R74BDX from Lewis`.

That means I am going with a high street retailer plus the 5 year guarantee is worth paying a bit more for.

Ive been thinking about gettin a LE37R74 for when i move house in the next few weeks.

Have been looking at getting one from 247electrics.co.uk as there selling them for around 770. Found it on another forum, and have also seen them for 770 via amazon.co.uk.

Not sure if they are going to be 100% trustworthy. And would i be better paying for it on my credit card for extra cover.

Can anyone recommened a good place to get a nice (but cheap) TV stand for this LCD?

John Lewis will price match to £867 and with that you get a free 5 year guarantee and free delivery.

As for TV stands; a mate of mine got her Samsung stand from Amazon.co.uk.

I will be getting a Besta Enon TV cabinet type thing from Ikea as it hides cables and looks quite nice.

Cheers
