My Phillips car radio will not play despite the dials being illuminated. If i turn the volume really high i do get a very low sound on a radio station but other than that i cant even get a sound from my CD. Any ideas or do i bin it. Thanks.

There isn`t anything on it that mutes the volume I supose? Are connections good?

philips r normally useless, so if it`s not the above or maybe someone else`s sugestion, bin the philips & buy any good make other than philips.

Have you disconected the battery recently? Sounds like some kind of security lock out has kicked in. Do you have a pin code for your radio?

Cheers Pete.

Yes Friend, I have disconnected the battery and reconnected and put in the pin code still nothing. I`ve even taken out the radio and found a 7.5 amp fuse which I replaced and still nothing. It all started when I tried using the CD socket. There was a little blip and then no sound from either the radio or CD, I can tell the radio is working becasue if I raise the volune to full I do hear a sound but very very low.I have a feeling I am not going to win. Thanks again to everyone who tried to help.

It sounds like the power amp chip has gone, very common fault. The way you have described it is spot on.

We used to change loads of them under guarantee as it was only about £3 for the chip, only thing is you will be looking at a bill of at least £70 in labour :(

There are so many reasonably priced cd players out it may be worth upgrading to a new one. You can even get an Alpine now for less than £80 !!!

Go to halford to see which one you like then buy yourself a copy of max power, there are loads of on-line retailers that will sell you the same one a lot cheaper. Phone a couple as well as normally they will beat each others prices and will give you a lower price that they have advertised in the mag, we used too.

All the best

Gerald.
