Recommend me a DivX DVD Player...

chewie (Elite) posted this on Saturday, 27th May 2006, 15:21

Basically, I want a DivX DVD player that is versatile with RGB scart output and at cheapest price possible. I`m not interested in the DVD player aspect (my current Toshiba multi-region will keep it`s DVD duties), just the ability to play DivX, cheers.

The toshiba SD260E currently going at £40 from Currys... Tried to find it on the net and thats the cheapest. It has progressive scan built in, so if your TV is capable of handling the output - connect using component.

I bought a Pioneer universal player some time back, and now rue the fact that I spent £120 whereas the Toshiba would have provided me with component output on PAL progressive scan as well as a Digital audio out to my amp... I havent used it so no comments on the quality but looked good in the demo I saw it connected to a Samsung HDTV in... Downside - I havent been able to find a region hack for it (dad wants one so was looking for the region hack).

Think it is a firmware update for Toshibas, it was for our old SD220 any way.

If you click on shopping just on the left, then try multidvd, they will send you the firmware disk for £20 if I remember right, all you do is run it once and then send it back to them.

All the best

Gerald.

Hmm... if it is a firmware update, you can avoid paying £20 by looking at Softpedia. Thats how I hacked my Pioneer - which I must admit - is a bitch to hack. Firmware downgrade, change to multi region and then a firmware upgrade, and it is pristine as ever and back to multi region.

the technika dvdr 2005 recorder from tesco`s has progresive scan, RGB component & the dreaded composite connections :) & it does of coarse play divx (tho the box simply states mp4 playback) but it handles .avi`s just fine it`s either £59.99p or £69.99p can`t remember which, but either way i reckon it`s gotta be your best bet + it`s got the extra recording features yet with an excelent price + it`s tesco`s, if ya don`t like it just take the f***er back :D

i can`t really coment on the quality of the dvd playback because i`ve not really had time to play with it, but it play divx as well as any of my other players (& i have another 4 divx compatable players)

hope this helps :)

I agree with the "TheOgster" as it does all that it say`s on the box, quality is good and play`s DIVX. It can lock up when Xvid is tried, It`s happy with any region straight out the box.
Slim and neat for the price. No problem of noise or fans running. nearly plays every thing that I throw at it.
Aldi had a recorder that was Divx but thats seems to be like rocking horse S**t at the stores.
Hope this helps.

Cheers all. I`ve been looking at the Philips DVP5100, as that seems to get a good write-up.

Superted - can you tell me how to check the region on the Toshiba? My dad-in law just bought the SD260E and it was promised multiregion from a website but just want to confirm
