Auto-detection problems.

Tricks (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Saturday, 22nd September 2001, 15:18

Hi
I`ve got a Hitachi widescreen TV, about 2 years old (i`ll try and find the model if it helps) and a Scan DVD player.
The problem I have is that, when you turn on the DVD player the TV picture changes to AV1 for only a moment, and then returns to say BBC1 (which you can only hear the sound from but the picture is a broken up image of the DVD). To simplify, I can`t watch terestrial TV channels if the player is on, and the TV will not automatically got to AV1 or RGB (preferably) once the player is turned on.
Also, the TV never dectects which sort of disc is in the player (as in aspect ratio) and always returns to the defalt 4.3.
The DVD player is set up for a 16.9 TV.
Simple problems, but anoying nontheless.
Any ideas?
Thanx
T

Tricks

I do not have the mentioned products , but try this .

1 - Is your DVD player plugged into a loop through your VCR , Sat , etc ? if so try plugging it into its own AV slot .

2 - Do you have another product in a Scart socket ? If you do have one , if it is on , it can sort of ` cancel ` your freshly turned on DVD player . Try turning it off if there is one on , then turn your Player on .

3 - Try looking at on-screen options on your TV , it might be a simple click of a button , to perhaps make your TV Auto-detect the picture signal , if you have it locked on 4:3 ratio ?

Hope this is of some help ?

Thanx for the reply Gazza

Only the DVD is plugged into the TV, via RGB Scart socket.
Can`t see any options on the TV`s menu, either.
I have a feeling it`s the TV and not the DVD but could be wrong.
Cheers anyway.

Had another play and it seems that if I set the scart mode on the DVD from RGB to composite, I can channel hop to the other TV stations without having to turn the DVD off.
But want to keep using RGB as the picture seems a little clearer to me.
Also still have detection problems (of the aspect ratio and AV channel).
Not really a problem as I said before, but it would be nice if I could fix it.

Thinking about it, the TV has only ever auto detected 16:9L ( thats a vertically streched 16:9 picture that fills all of the screen) from television programs, and no other ratio ever!
I seem to remember it goes to 16:9L when those Stella Artois films are on channel four.
I think it`s time I called Hitachi to see what I can do.
Just thinking aloud again.

Hi

Come join us at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Scan2000

But think your problem is

1) many TV`s do not implement RGB correctly. Richard White should know if you TV model is affected by this (make a post to the above group if you whish to confirm this)

2) The aspect problem may be down to how you have set the player up, the scart cable you are using, the DVD you are playing, a fault with the TV or a fault with the player.

Double check that the player is set to 16:9, check the scart lead is fully wired. Check the DVD`d you are playing are anamorphic (not wide screen 4:3) and if you can test the player on another WS TV.
