VCD advice

miracleboy (Harmless) posted this on Monday, 17th September 2001, 10:50

I need some advice on a player for playing VCDs on standard CDRs. I have a Panasonic A160EB at the moment which will not play anything other than standard R2 DVD`s - anything other than that it refuses to recognise the disc. So I am reluctantly going to replace it with another player that can play virtually anything - especially bog standard CDR media. I want to keep it under £200 - can anyone recommend a player that falls into both categories and is easily available from say high street or supermarket. Many thanks.

tosh 210

Thats currently the best DVD player for under £200, u can check the reviews in the mags:)

Says it does CD-R/CD-RW and mp3/VCD as well.

But I hear the drive can be noisy...

Thanks for that :o)

I was considering the Wharfedale 750S - does anyone have any experience with this player? It is supposed to be excellent value for money from what I have read - and does Tesco still sell these?

Also everywhere only refers to the Toshiba SD110E, can`t find the 210 anywhere.

Currys, Comet, Tesco all sell the SD110E - is there any difference?

Id definatly get down too smiths just read all the dvd/tech mags :)

The wharfedales not a bad player either.

But then the Tosh 210 has scooped every possible award out there....

Richer sounds got em

This companies got em...

Ive got my scan DVD player... and like 100 vcds here:) but quality really counts.

Although im not sure how much difference in picture there is between my Scan dvd player and a Tosh...

I have a Eclipse 695 DVD player from Richer sounds and i think it is v. good. It`s £179.99 I think, but well worth the money. It plays all regions and RCE and VCD/SVCD and MP3. So it will play anything you throw at it.

Ditto the second batch of Taiwanese-built Wharfedale M5 players on sale in Tesco for £150, serial number 127xxxxx. (The 750S is not available anymore, sadly).

Thanks for your advice guys - I eventually went for the Tosh SD-210E from Techtronics, fully modded in black. Cheers...

Hi mate I had the same problem as u with VCDs but I found out If u get a copy of Click & burn for your PC/cd rewriter theres a program to record VCDs which plays in my DVD from VCDs which previously didn`t work
Try places like gamecopyworld for the download

Yep this is actually true, u have too burn the VCD too a VCD type standard... burning it with incorrect software makes the VCD all iffy and unpredictable.

If you use Nero 5.5 use the VCD burning mode too burn VCDS, thats the only garranteed way it will run on VCD/DVD players problem free.

Adaptec and others are crap, and pointless and if u burn VCDS with Adaptec or incorrectly it will not exactly run properly it not at all.
