As i have only ever heard my own player, I wanted to ask others about the noise level generated by their players whilst playing a disc.
i.e. If you insert a disc and press play with all your sound turned off can you hear the disc spinning?, I have started to notice that with quiet scenes in films all I can hear is the spinning hum of the player !!!.
Is this typical of all players?

It happened with my Samsung 511 but not on my LG3200E

some people, have reported it on the Toshiba 210E too.

So it seems to be a pretty common thing but it never caused me any problems. Can be a little distracting though.

Not really (I have a Samsung 709). It`s no noisier than a normal CD player, and a hell of a lot quieter than my VCR and laserdisc player (the latter sounds like Concorde taking off!)

I suppose if you were sitting right next to the player and you had the volume turned really low it might be a bit annoying, but under normal circumstances it`s not noticeable.

The only DVD player that doesn`t make a slight noise when working is one that is not turned on or in standby......

I am finding mine to be much more noticeable than i expected.
I can hear the spinning of the disc whilst i am watching films, i did not expect this to be the case as it is very off putting.

Just do what my dad did when his ropey old car made another new noise - turn the radio up (ie turn the volume up).

If you can`t hear it, there isn`t anything wrong.

Well you think you got a problem try buying a hamster they go round on there b*st**rd wheel all night shaking the house, I prey it will die but it just wont!

If the noise more noticable than the whir that everyone hears it could be that it is actually vibration which is causing the problem. I`ve found the following can be the cause.

1. Excessive heat can make the transport mechanism more noisy as parts expand. I have found my cable digibox gives off a lot of heat.

2. If the player is under or on another bit of kit the disc spinning may cause vibration in the objects around it causing the DVD player to vibrate in symapthy, making more noise.

3. If the player is not level it could be that it is vibrating or causing a loose or uneven shelf to vibrate.

In all cases you can minimise the vibration with isolation pads/cones. What hifi suggests that squashballs cut in half can do the same job. I didn`t bother, I just moved my player off the top of the VCR onto its own shelf away from the digibox and it was fine.

Scan DVD player has the most quietest yet fastest drive:)

I cannot hear it at all when playing VCDS/DVDs, but if I go too 64x it does make a bit more noise.

IMO a quiet drive is the smybol of a good player, the last thing u want too hear during a stand off scene in an action film or a break during a song is Whiirrrr Whirrrr :)
