Please help me choose a DVD recorder

Help.. My VCR has given up the ghost and I am now considering buying a DVD recorder. Due to the fact that I have some Argos vouchers and an extremely limited budget I have been looking at 3 models

Samsung

Liteon

Goodmans

Can anybody give me any advice on whether any of these are worthwhile. I will be using it only for recording and watching programmes recorded from terrestrial TV and NTL digital cable. I would also like to be able to play any recorded discs on other DVD players

Thanks

I`m not suggesting that you buy it from Richer Sounds, but in terms of DVD Recorders out there at the moment, there is only one choice.

Remember that the Panasonic DVD-RAM discs will not play on ordinary DVD players, and DVD-RW will only work if it has been recorded in Video Mode. DVD-R and +R discs will play in ordinary DVD players after finalizing, but they are not editable or re-recordable.
Out of the first 3 models mentioned, I think I`d go for the Liteon.

If funds are tight, you might look at the Bargain Buckets forum.
I saw a Cello one in Somerfield recently for £59, and the Co-op were selling something similar a few weeks ago for £50...

I`d go for a Liteon or Panasonic if funds permitted, but I can`t afford it either!

The Panasonic models only record -RW in VIDEO mode so no need to worry there.
All editable discs are incompatible with most other players, whether its RAM or -RW(VR).
+RW allows "hiding" of sections to enable advert skipping but thats about all its good for.
All the budget models mentioned are a bit tacky but if thats what your budget will go to I wouldn`t bother with any of them when you can get
the Panny for £110 - a good deal.
If you can stretch to £250-£300 get one with a HDD recorder built in.
Its far superior to direct dvd recording and allows literally hundreds of hours on the HDD without needing a single blank.
On top of that, you can edit stuff before copying to dvd at high speed if you want to.
Without exception the el cheapo models from supermarkets will be DVD+ deadbeats and be lacking in key features like good editing or RGB input, and usually both
