Plasma or LCD....?

Hulk Smash! (Elite) posted this on Monday, 27th February 2006, 07:54

I`ll be buying a new "screen" soon :D , and was just wondering whether to go for a plasma screen or an LCD screen - is one much better than the other?

I`ve got about £1500 to spend and don`t know whether to buy a 42" plasma or a smaller LCD... which will be better for dvds and high-definition....?

Can anyone (that`s you Dr 42%er!) recommend any decent plasma/lcd screens under £1500? (only "must" is for it to be HD ready...)

Thanking you kindly.... :)

Thread Hijack ;)

While your here Doc any inside info on how much of an effect SED screens ( when they are released ) will have on the price of LCD ? and have you heard when they are likely to be available here ?
They sound the dogs whatsits - response time less than 1 ms , contrast ratio 100,000:1and good blacks not grey in dark scenes.

Don`t hold your breath. SED (Surface Emissive Displays) have been the "next big thing" for the last 3 or 4 years. There have many demonstrations and prototypes at shows but nothing real.

If size is the ruling factor,a colleague of mine has just bought a 40 inch Samsung LCD for £1200 and it`s lovely.

Model LE40R51.
The whole Samsung `R` range is award winning stuff.
I personally wouldn`t thank you for plasma these days, but I`m no expert.
If Sony have jacked-in Plasma, that`s good enough reason for me to avoid it.

Yeah, that`s one of the models I`ve been looking at - it does seem very nice! (and a decent price too). :)

Aren`t Sony starting to use Samsung panels in some of their sets as well ?

I`d suggest popping down to a half decent dealer for some demos. I opted for a 32" LCD but I have a wife that didn`t want a huge TV taking over the living room. I might have taken a closer look at Plasma otherwise.

the doc may very well correct me on this But i think samsung now supply 100% of sony`s lcd panels, along with two thirds of the other "big" companies, the notable exceptions being panasonic & hitachi (tho as i say, the doc might shoot that down, i can`t remember where i heard it)

btw, my dad just got the 32" version of the screen bowfer posted, it`s brilliant in hi-def mode (running trailers via the pc input) & standard dvd`s, but broadcast analogue looks f***ing awfull as does the majority of freeview (integrated) & sky, both connected via fully wired rgb scart....

oddly, the dvd recorder he got at the same time see,s to output a better picture using it`s integrated freeview (it`s a new panny recorder from empier direct, never checked the model number, but it`s one of the multi format ones)

Have you/your dad had a play with the settings Ogster ?
It may look better with some of the picture processing `gubbins` switched on/off ?
I`ve read reviews saying that analogue pictures are crap on the Samsung (who cares..),but I don`t recall anyone saying there were probs with digital (SKY/FV) pictures.

Oh,and Tebbo,if you look on the net hard enough, you`ll always find someone who`s had a bad experience with practically anything.
For example,my current Audi is a right unreliable pile of mince, but my last one was faultless.

I have the 28" & 32" Tevion LCDs from Aldi. They are Samsung screens. The 28" one having a duel tuner. If you stand close to any LCD with Analogue or Freeview on a lower bitrate broadcast the LCD picks up all the faults & looks bad. Given a good source most LCDs look good. We sit about two & a half to 3 meters from the 32" & at that distance most channels look good, some look excelent & some programmes well out perform any CRT. We often watch semi & sometimes full HDTV on it, the picture is then just fantastic. I`m going to take 42 er`s advice & get the 40" Samsung or Sony LCD, but not sure when.
