Page 1 of LG RH7500- Anyone managed to record from an NTSC source?

Hi all,

I`ve been trying to record onto my RH7500 from an NTSC VCR source, but when you view the source through the RH7500, the picture seems a bit scrambled (like on a TV that doesn`t support NTSC).

Now, my TV supports NTSC, and when I switch off the RH7500, I can still view the NTSC tape ok on the TV, but I can`t seem to record a clean picture onto the RH7500. I`ve tried various configs on the back of the RH7500, but without joy.

At present, I`ve got the following devices connected:
TV (via AV1)
VCR (via AV2)
Cable TV (via AV3)

I`ve tried switching things around, but nothing seems to work! Surely if the RH7500 can playback NTSC DVDs, it must be able to record an NTSC signal?

it could if its region free my cyberhome does it o.k with region hack but not without it and you might need a macro remover as well. as i have both i don`t have any problem
with my vcr`s pic at all. (make sure vcr`s heads is clean!!)

An NTSC VHS tape will be output from UK vcr in PAL 60,not pure NTSC.
Apart from Pioneer and Philips recorders (that will record PAL 60),I believe most others,including Panasonic will only record pure NTSC which is not output from a UK vcr

Hi, thanks for your feedback.

I have already done the region hack (so can finally play my region1 disks!), but it makes no difference to the picture of the incoming VCR.

It`s defo not a problem with the VCR head/s because the picture displays as intended when either:
a) the RH7500 is switched off, so the VCR signal passes straight through
b) When the VCR is connected directly to the TV
It`s got to be something to do with the way the RH7500 is handling things.

What is a "macro remover", and where can I get one from?

I think you *may* be onto something, although not completely sure, as I`m not at all clued up on the exact differences of the formats...

To clarify, the VHS tapes were bought abroad (so I`d assume they`re regular NTSC). My VCR is a UK model though, Panasonic model no NV-HD640B. It actually says on the VCR itself "VHS PAL - NTSC P.B. On PAL TV". So does that mean that the VCR is trying to convert the NTSC signal to PAL, in which case why should it be a problem for the RH7500 because it should see a PAL signal??? Confused!! :/

Hi,
Don`t know if ity will cure your problem but I use a sonel lead from their website and this has enabled me to remove macro when recording. Works on my RH 7500.

The Sonel lead removes copy protection and won`t solve this problem.
Around 1990 the first UK vcr`s from Panasonic were released that could play NTSC tapes on a UK tv.
While virtually all modern tv`s now have no problem displaying NTSC,back then many sets would not give colour on an NTSC signal,so the output from these VCR`s enabled most tv`s to display colour.
But the playback is neither true PAL or true NTSC,its a compromise in between.
Consequently,your DVDR ,and others cannot record the output as they need a true PAL or NTSC signal.
The only dvdr`s that I am aware of that will record the PAL 60 output is either Pioneer or Philips.
Having said that,I don`t know for sure if LG is unable to record PAL 60,but chances are that if it does,the least you would probably have to do is alter a setting within the recorder setup somewhere.

nostalgiadvd, thanks VERY much for your detailed reply. It now makes perfect sense! The VCR`s manual actually calls this "Quasi-NTSC".

Doing a bit of a search around the web following your comments, it appears that if I wanted to get around this problem, I`d have to get a PAL60->PAL50 converter, but they`re not exactly cheap - certainly more than I`d like to pay to transfer a handful of NTSC tapes that I have.

Your easiest option would be to get a Philips or Pioneer dvd.That would cost at least £150(although Richer Sounds are doing discontinued older models as cheap as £99.99).A decent standards converter would degrade the picture anyway and cost a lot more,so the direct to dvdr option is best.
You could always get a Pioneer 220 for about £250 and you`d have a quality machine that included a HDD and you`d be set up perfectly
